I always thought Subarus are free spinning engines. If so, there shouldn't be any internal damage at all. Interested to see the outcome, but hope for the best!

Subarus are interference I am afraid. I lost my engine 2 weeks after buying the car due to a dodgy timing belt change.

Damn Different story with the Gen 1 Libertys though. We've had two timing belt failures on previous cars with no internal damage.

cant confirm the extent of the damage yet..

but my mate said he'll help me out

700 to pull the motor out and take the head off
3-400 to repair the head if its damaged

rest of the costs will vary depending on what needs replacing..

If your mate is handy with that type of thing, do some porting work while the heads are off.

im not looking to do any performance mods so no forged parts, plus my pocket isnt deep enough







took a quick look under the bonnet today.
found a few broken pieces here and there and a ugly looking cam cover

Feel the pressure of someone random on the internet you may never meet questioning your sexual orientation based solely on your (at this stage, incorrect) choice not to have your mate attack the ports with a dremel.

Somewhat back on topic, did you try and crank the motor over after it stopped? I did on mine. 16 vavles done. Pistons were okay though.
You are in a good position with a mate offering to help like that.

Robert sorry to hear about your misfortune mate

A couple of things;

1. Is that a pulley on your engine bay undertray in the first pic?????

2. 300-400 per side to service the heads? If for both then that is dirt cheap

3. Don't want to scare you and hope it doesn't require it, but a full rebuild is the usual requirement once a timing belt snaps. If so then budget 5000 for a stock rebuild.

When was timing belt last done and who did it? If recent I would be seeing them

2009 onwards 2L STi Spec C engine is a bolt in swap. Dual AVCS, big port heads(like massive ports!) with hypereutectic pistons. Has thicker bores, better pistons and bigger cams and best of all, the price for an import motor is decent

2L engines put out same power as a 2.5L STi and the 2L runs less boost
