Auto transmission is good in terms of no harsh up shifts or down shifts, but 1st gear is hanging on at almost stock levels, 0.5 to 1 sec delay, where all other shift are in milliseconds. So when the E85 tune is sorted, will ask to have the 1st gear shifting reviewed.

Some maintenance will be occurring over the Xmas / New Year break, if I can live without the car for a week or more. CV joints and front axles are also in need of some love.

Car has notched over 250,000 kms and feels strong everywhere else. She is a sleeper keeper !!!

Update time.

Had the CV joints and axles looked at in detail by both STI and Pedders. The whole front end has been gone over by both of them twice now, with no luck in resolving the clunk issue that I am hearing.

According to STI, I should seriously consider a better quality of fastening for the filter and the fan for the sc kit, both of which are mounted in the guard. They say it is a bit loose and maybe the noise that I am hearing. So, I will do that when I next have the front bar off.

And another thing: I have been running 5W40 oil for the last year and a bit due to the sc kit and oil consumption combination. Oil consumption has been normal ever since. During the service by STI, they put there standard 5W30 in as a replacement. I knew that was going to be the case, as I could not get any of my Redline stuff due to the dealer being closed over the Xmas/New Year period. After the service, I was on the freeway heading home and the engine malfunction light came on along with a flashing cruise control light. Turned around and went back to STI and they indicated a VVL fault, cleaned the sensor, reset the fault codes and then sent me home. On the way home, it happened again! To make sure, the following day, I took it for a drive and after the warm up period, the problem happened again. Took it back to STI again and they asked me what oil I normally run and confirmed that if the car has been tuned with 5W40, then it should remain using 5W40. So they dumped the oil and replaced it with some Penrite 5W40. Problem solved! Drove home without any issues and the car feels strong again on WOT! :)

So I guess I just proved the ol' saying, ''Oils ain't oils"!!!

Wow that's good feedback there mark

Who would've thought the 32 bit ecu is sophisticated enough to detect even viscosity changes in oil!

Unbelievable.

I have some sweet low k billies on swifts to test if the loose fan/cooler isn't the clunking issue

Family friendly sounds

The H6 I completed some weeks ago for customer here in Mackay - cant really ever hear it inside the car, it has the sealed watercooled charger and is more or less silent. Initially a charger will quieten down over a 6 week period compared to when first installed

I too look forward to new pics and whatever other info comes along on this project

But the parameters for the Valve Timing may have been adjusted in the tuning process, so waiting on confirmation from Matt. It may be more sensitive to change than it was in stock tune.

I had Pedders check all of their installed components, including the XA Coilovers. Nothing found. Though STI did pick up that one of the rear sway bar bushes needed some lub.

I still like that sound. Today when I was at STI, as they were taking the car out for some road testing, I could clearly hear the whine, specifically in their workshop and as it drove past the front entrance. Another guy at STI heard it as well and he commented, "That sounds like a sick turbo". I told him it was not a sick turbo, but a supercharged H6. The expression on his face was priceless! :D

VVL oil pressure tables are stock but having logged AVCS error with oil changes in other cars, it is consistent

Thanks Matt, that confirmation is priceless.

I now know that I need to maintain the oil at 5W40 as opposed to the standard 5W30. I asked STI if they could log that in their system against my car and the computer said, Nooo !!! Oh well, Oil World here I come for some of the good Redline stuff.

I thought Redline was frowned upon for our cars (specifically diff / gearbox)

Any links or reading to support that statement? I would be most interested to understand.

And Happy New Year! :)

Something to do with the Redline shockproof not being good for our cars? I have seen a few people say that on this forum.

Sounds more like opinion than fact. I like the empirical data to support such statements otherwise I disregard them.

Had a quick search on several forums this morning, MX5, 370Z, Camaro, GTR, etc, and several tuning and racing web sites and they all promote Redline as one of the best oils for engine, transmission and diffs. Some rate the Motul Oil for transmissions ahead of Redline, but the shock proof anti shear properties of the oil must be a highly regarded property globally speaking as there is a weight of opinion on several web sites and forums to support that point of view.

Our Subaru's share a lot of common componentry with Nissan, Mazda and Toyota (i.e. Jatco transmissions from Japan) and I would need to understand what differentiates our cars from the other Japanese brands that would mean we need to steer away from some of the best oil around.

So, feed me links or empirical data please. :)
