Subwoofer option for mac equipped wagons

Stereos, amps, phone kits, Navi...

Postby 05gtwagonman » Wed Mar 26, 2008 8:16 pm

Your right... I do know. I don't know what you are looking for though.
You might like crispy creme' I fuggen hate em. But that's a whole new thread...
I agree, even a fixed 140 should sound better to your ear...
But 140 would be too high for me and mine, but the tame oem sub will do fug all at 60 which is where the whole shooting match really starts to turn my crank- so the whole exercise is a little academic in that regard to me. If I know anything, muddy is above 140, but it is still a little so at 140, but you won't hear the damn thing out of that sub if you go any lower...

I know what you mean. Bit stuck I guess, if I stick with my current sub/amp combo - in summary, if I drop the crossover frequency, it'll sound less muddy, but it won't be making any noise due to lack of power :P

oh well.

Do you think sound deadening would help my cause much?

Not really. The parcel shelf has carpet and a thin mdf type on top, it will stop a lot of the tinny rattles coming though, if it is rattling, find the source an stop them, but the boot is lined, the cabin is lined, the problem goes much deeper...
The only way around has been discussed earlier in this thread. More power is the only other way. Use the force tangcla padawan!!!

BTW; where is ric and mo-gt on this, I'm not the tech Ric is, and Mo has shed light on the more full on actions taken to go the next level. I was just giving some thoughts on the middle ground particular to wagons...

I'm fairly sure it's the high-mount centre stop light. I'll get some cardboard and wedge it in there, ghetto styles :D

Rich, thought I'd give this a go with a 12" I had from a previous car, also 4ohms, like the stocky, and wow what a difference! Starts to clip and get a bit woofy when you go over 31 or so, but otherwise, very nice kick :-) I might see if a 10 would offer better control with the stock amp.

BTW, what size box did you end up making? Pics?

Chriskan,
I couldn't find exactly the same model as this one I have, but the up to date model in the US - http://mobile.jlaudio.com/products_encl ... od_id=316-
shows you the principle. The secret is not the driver so much as the slot ported enclosure. There is plenty of info on JL's site. At any rate I have mates still in JB here in Brisvegas that would be happy to sort you out with the right one...
If you have the time study up on enclosure design and build one for yourself, but if you are like me, the whole day I would spend is worth more to me than the value of the box in the $399 package, knowing that you are getting a top quality sub for the price as well...

Chris, I have a friend at JB Chadstone if you want to go shopping. Let me know.

thanks Rich, my previous rex had 3 x JL 12W6's in in - one of the main reasons I went with teh w6's was the ability to build such a small enclosure and the efficient speaker, powered by a PPI Art A1200 :)

now I'm wishing I hadn't sold all my gear! It's currently sounding quite good. Just curious as to the enclosure size, the one I have now is not too big, but if yours is smaller, I might look at grabbing a JL again for the sake of a smaller box.

Nah, Chriskan, My enclosure is not small. But do me a favour- Take up Clarences offer to talk to his contact at Chadstone, and having performed the simple operation of extending the wires from the OEM sub, go there and ask to take one of the JL slot port prefab boxes out to your car so that you can test the difference between what you have and what it does.
If you make it really quick and easy, I'm sure that he wont mind the slight extra work. (that said if Chady is in a westfield you might be better picking a destination Jb store where you just need to walk into the carpark right outside...)
I can't say it any clearer, I'd be really suprised if the JL does not make for a substantial improvement. That said- not knowing what it is up against, but it is likely to be substantially better...

You can lead a horse to water... :?

It's no skin off my nose- I'm just passionate about my car and it's sound(inandout) and if your av leads me in the right direction- being you drive sti!!!! spend the little bit- it's the right outcome...

Sorry to go again but BTW- I think that you still have not got it. The technology is in the box, not the driver. Yes you will need a decent driver, but the ability to produce solid sub bass with a small amount of power is really most about the enclosure...
There is no substitute for cubic inches. Turbos are like really big amps, they will make a small driver and enclosure work strong, but NA + cubes deliver with ease... Possibly a bad annalogy for this forum. :D :not_i:

Shouldn't be a problem, if my friend is working :) the loading bay is adjacent to the carpark, and undercover too.

Yep I understand, as I've been an audiophile for a long time and have a very nice velodyne slot ported sub sitting in my HT room :)

Didn't realise the enclosure you were talking about was pre-fab though, that's a whole other (easier) story!! I was thinking I'd have to start building boxes again and frankly, just too hard (read: lazy) when what I have now works!

I look after IT for a couple of car audio stores that also do JL, so I'll chase it up through them.

Cheers
