My car smells like it just farted - bad gas emissions?

My car smells like it just farted - bad gas emissions?

Postby Spec.B-GT » Tue Mar 25, 2008 11:26 pm

Hi guys,

I have a 3.0rb and I find that the car lets off a gassy egg fart smell, everytime I hit full throttle :stink: The smell seeps right through the cabin & annoys the crap out of me (not to mention my passengers). I would expect these peculiar gas smells on a new car during the run-in phase, but not so sure when it's done close to 18,000kms, well past the run-in period.

Is this normal? Does anybody else still experience these smelly gas emissions long after run-in period?

I thought it may be linked to the petrol perhaps? I always pour +98 octane. I regularly use v-power, ultimate 98, and vortex 98 which are suppose to clean your engine as well....hmmm not too sure on their cleaning properties.

Would be interested to hear others thoughts....

The smell is most likely sulphur.

So i guess it's something to do with the catalytic converter? :dntknw:

I've never noticed a smell with my 3RB. I usually run Shell-95.

(A workmate in an Audi a I dragged off at the freeway entrance did complain that he could smell me though...)

I avoid feeding my 3RB eggs or beans, I'm sure that helps.

It's generally a sign that the car is running very lean. Commodores had this problem a few years ago when Holden were trying to fiddle the consumption figures on a new model and leaned the fuel right off. Whether or not it's the same problem I don't know. Funny how it's affecting the 3.0r's. :?

Thanks for the input guys...

The most annoying thing is that the smell lingers through my air con vents everytime I drive it hard... hopefully this will get better over time

I guess it can't hurt to ask Subaru at my next service.
