I have some photos that might help you all

what you need to make it perfect without cutting or splicing any wire is:
-electric divide harness
http://www.japanparts.com/db/parts_deta ... RCH_page=2

-audio head unit T-harness (you'll need a male and female plug of the head unit) and make sure that all pins is populated (I ordered two of each cause this one have one pin missing)
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Factory-Oem-Rad ... b1&vxp=mtr
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Radio-Stereo-In ... 33646b149a

-4 pin male plug that you can plug it with this female plug ( you can just use two wires with pins from the divide harness cause you don't need them all )
Image

and most of all is that you need the 16-pin and the audio 20-pin harness

here is a link to my navi project album with some pictures

I have the v12 Whereis disc that I'm happy to try and make some copies of/loan (but my unit refuses to boot from it).
Suspect that maybe the drive is cactus?

You would need a genuine disk to start it up then you can put the burnt version in if you have it

Yep.

Looks like my drive may be faulty. I have the genuine original disc (used condition) but my unit just spits the correct disc message each time.

EDIT: Anyone got a spare drive I can borrow to test with (and possibly buy?)

Isn't there two types of units that need different CDs?

There is?

I have a FVZ203MF2 / 86271AG060 (Which I assume is the Australian Subaru Kenwood DVD/Nav Unit) & a Subaru branded Whereis V12 Maps DVD. (86283AG100). The disc was in the drive when I got it.

When I put the car to ON or started, the unit says it's updating the system and then spits an "Error; System unable to access the program. Please insert proper disc."

So my assumption from this is that either a) the dvd I have is wrong (it reads perfectly fine in a PC, so it's not damaged) or b) the drive I have is stuffed.

I'm assuming you didn't have any of these issues Hamish? If the drive is faulty (and the disc is correct) would a Japanese drive work?

I already tried a European Drive with an American screen and it works without any problem.
I suggest that you try and use a dry cleaning CD.
And by the way, would you please give me a copy of the disk that you have?? I need the udpated data of the program from it.

I can make you an iso but don't have anywhere to host it. Let me see what I can sort out.

I'm going to give cleaning my current drive a go first, but if it doesn't work, can I at borrow it from you to test?
If it works, I'd be happy to buy it from you. Is that ok?

p.s. Just uploading the first part of the v12 iso now. We dont have access to dropbox at work, so I'm doing it from my phone.

If you don't have an unlimited data plan on your phone, I suggest you to stop uploading cause it'll cost you a lot.

By the way, I had a question.

Does the Japanese Navigation have an English interface??
