My car really loves freeway driving. Just filled up with an average of 9.426 l/100 (including over 1/3 suburban driving) compared to 14.64 l/100 for purely suburban driving (and 98% of the time not being a leadfoot).

After I reset my trip meter the computer calculated an average of 8.2 which is a figure I haven't seen since I bought the car and drove it from Brisbane to Sydney. I still think car needs a tune from both a performance and economy perspective and if I decide to get the extractors I will definitely get the tune done too.

How are you guys getting such good economy..

Even with babying my car most of the way, I've still got 12.6L/100km :(

I only got 400km for the last tank, mostly suburb driving and around 150km of highway

Chris,

Mine is sitting on 9.8l/100km for the current tank with an average of 10.0l/100km for the last 10,000km - according to the trip computer, anyway.

Most of my driving is in the country and the Adelaide hills (I stopped at a pedestrian traffic light for the first time since I can't remember, earlier this week) and although much of it is pretty hilly there are not a lot of twists and turns.

The killer really is accelerating. Even on my hills I can usually use the downhill to help me up the next uphill but if I had to constantly accelerate out of corners (or away from traffic lights) I'm certain the fuel economy I'm getting would crash. I haven't had the car tuned in any special way and, to the best of my knowledge, it is still stock tuned.

Also, I find that if I hammer it a little bit, it takes a long time to get that moment of adrenalin rush out of the economy calculations.

I generally get around 600km out of a tank.

cheers,

bj

12.6l is not bad. considering the offical combined economy is at 12.5l (highway/urban).

And considering some of us are getting 16+l/100km...

It's also important to acknowledge the 3.0R is a performance engine with almost as much power as the HSV 5 litre V8s of 10 years ago. Also, constant AWD is also going to drag down the economy a bit over a FWD configuration.

Finally took my r-b wagon for a cruise in the country - fuel economy improved from 17l/100km at the start (about 100kms of city driving) to 13.2 by the end (about 250kms on country roads). So I was probably getting around 10ish in the country, and that wasn't sparing the throttle.

In fact, the strangest thing is that it dropped nearly 4 litres per 100kms despite the fact that in the country on nice open roads with fun curves, I was driving it pretty, er, enthusiastically, often getting up around the redline. While in the city, I barely touch anything above 3000rpm and the accelerator rarely goes more than a quarter depression.

Obviously whatever is going on with mine, it's to do with stop start driving and low RPM acceleration in the city. Hopefully something that tuning can improve/fix. Slightly counter-intuitive that opening it up in the country is so much more efficient than slow, gentle driving in the city.

Out of interest, if there was a mechanical issue (filter/other components) causing poor economy, would that affect country driving too?

The liberty is great fun to drive. Moving the car from stand still is very energy hungry. Have a look at the instantaneous reading when moving off, even on little throttle compared to running at 60-80 km/h.

17L/100km

Mine would creep up to 12L/100km pre-tune in heavy traffic or short trips which wouldn't get out of cold start rich setting.

Post-tune it sat around 11-12L/100km in heavy city traffic - but the real difference is on the highway - was getting 750kms range on fill up

Might be a bung O2 sensor which is wreaking havoc on your closed-loop tune, dirty air or fuel filter, poor fuel etc etc.

Mine has an EcuTek type 2 ECU and I think has been tuned (by the previous owner) for pure power. I am going to have to get it retuned, will get them to look into other possible causes of poor economy. I can't afford 17l/100km running 98!

from reading numerous threads on here, S&J Automotive in Radelaide are the only ones in your state that can unlock the EcuTek ECU to be able to tune it, but dont quote me on that one, you'll have to talk to dropz or t.renshaw34

It would be worthwhile checking to see if it is EcuTek or was just a generic reflash, some people thing EcuTek is the only software and think they are getting an EcuTek tune ;)

Taylor or any of the SA guys with a tactrix should be able to confirm if it is EcuTek or not

EcuTek is the devil, if you want a good tune and great value, talk to Matt (KiDo_Tuning)
