Engine Conversion Help PLEASE! - 1997 Impreza RX

Postby subrx1 » Thu Nov 22, 2012 6:59 pm

Hi everyone,
i think this is the correct section. not lib specific, but a lib engine soooo, give is a crack....

I'm relatively new here and just wanted some help with a small (wellll... big) problem i have come across.

So, my car has blown a head gasket :hairpull: :hairpull: :hairpull: :hairpull: :hairpull:

my car specs:
ej20 SOHC - 305000kms
fully mechanical speedo etc.

My idea was to do an engine conversion, to an EJ25, for some extra power, but nothing crazy. Dad has a 01 Lib Rx that i REALLY love the feel and power of the slightly bigger motor. i don't really want to just fix the head gaskets, because of the age and kms of the car. I am also on my P Plates in Victoria, so a turbo swap is out of the question.

I have a car to borrow for two months and a dad who is reasonably handy under the bonnet of a car, so were hoping to get it done then.

but after some research i have found that i will need a conversion kit (ecu, loom, etc.) and the prospect of that, the time frame and our minimal combined auto elec skills and knowledge seems a little daunting.

Just wondering what to do???
- Should we be worried about hooking up a loom & ecu?
- What else need to change?
- any other motor fit better?

- just put another ej20 in and wait to get a new car once off my Ps

IS THERE A BETTER OPTION???

ANY HELP OR ADVICE WOULD BE UTTERLY APPRECIATED!

THANKYOUUUU!

Hi there

Personally I think that is the best option

The effort and cost involved in doing such a conversion completely outweighs the minuscule benefit you may gain

If it was for a learning experience or to a highly sought after or rare car, then I could understand. But in this instance I wouldn't say the impreza rx is anything rare or carries a distinct character that cannot be replicated by another car

Good luck

Hi there where are you located? Swapping to a ej25 isn't a bad thing. Not to hard once you have all the parts. Pm me for more details as I might have another engine conversion up for sale very soon.

Thanks for the input mate.
for me it definately will be a huge learning experience and give me a lot more understanding of what is going on under the bonnet, as i am pretty far from a mechanic.
