Water noise coming from car

Hey Guys,

I only recently bought my '92 Liberty GX celebration, i notice last night that when driving there is noise that sounds like there is water running coming from the front right side, cant figure out if its the seal of windows or coming from the engine? Anybody have any ideas on what it may be? I bought the car off a work colleague who has had it for 10 years. He said there was nothing wrong with it etc, he is a honest guy.

I had that in my gen2. Had it for 3 years and no problem. Can't remember what it was but there's a thread on ozliberty.

Hey Mate,

You picked up a good little workhorse in that car. I have a '93 liberty wagon (apart from my '07 GT) and i also have the watery noise. My old man also had the noise in his '90 liberty wagon. It sounds like it is running through a pipe or something similar.

Can't say if it's a bad thing or not, but we have never had any sort of problem with them at all... and mine has just done over 300,000km.

If someone could shed some light as to what it is, that would be great as i am very curious??

You've got some air in your coolant system and it needs to be bled correctly. What you can hear is water gurgling around in your heater core.

Thanks for the heads up, i just spoke to my mate and this is what he said.

"Very common on the early model Liberty is the sounds of water flowing behind the dash. This is caused be air bubbles trapped in the heater core. This can be bleed out by raising the front of the car as high as possible and put a tall funnel on the radiator fill point (where the radiator cap sits) and run the engine for a few fan cycles. I'd recommend you try this when the engine has cool down enough to remove the radiator cap. If after you have bleed the cooling system and the noise comes back then you'll need to have the system checked for leaks. "

wow, good to know! mine does the same thing. mainly when i turn it on but that would be the only time its quiet enough to hear. thanks

Can also be caused sometimes from the windscreen drainage holes becoming blocked. From memory you need to undo the rear inner front guard and get a hose in there to clean it out.

Most likely the air in the coolant though. My Gen 3 does the same thing.

I taped a milk bottle to the top of my coolant cap. Fill it up with coolant and turn the car on. Make sure you have your heater set to the warmest setting, you don't need the A/C on either. I found the best way to bleed it was a combination of (once warmed up) holding revs at 3k whilst the thermostat opens, random revving and quick blips of the throttle. It took me up to 45 mins to get aall the air out!! Best to make sure all your hose clamps are tight first. That way you will eliminate any air getting back in just after you've bled the system.

also, when doing this, please flush out your heater core with a garden hose first.
it will most likely be 90% blocked and it restricts the flow of coolant into the engine

just whip off the heater hoses as they go through the firewall, and blow it through from one direction then the other until brown sludgy gunk stops coming out.

follow the burping procedure as outlined above and you won't risk overheating and blowing head-gaskets!
