The 'Retrofit Navigation' Thread

Postby SH30RB » Mon Oct 29, 2012 7:50 pm

I recently purchased a 90% complete kit for the OEM Subaru Satellite Navigation Unit

There wasn't much info on the forums about retro fitting one, until mitchy_bobby created an the most useful thread
"Subaru Factory Sat Nav Tutorial"
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=18951

In my package from Japan, this is what I received:
Display Unit
Front

Back

DVD Drive

Back

The harness that connects the DVD Drive to the Display Unit and the Antenna

I also received the fascia panel, but that was painted red and broken.

The idea of this thread is to basically have the information reguarding retrofitting the Navi Unit in one place, rather than scattered all over the place :)

Hey mate can I ask how much you picked that up for? Second hand units are extroidinarily overpriced and decent aftermarket units cost too much.

That whole package that is in the pictures, that was $70 before importing fee's from Japan.

My new DVD drive with a few extra goodies was $50 before importing fee's from Japan

 i just accquired another full navigation unit minus 80% of the wiring harness just to get the one plug that i needed.

I will most definitely end up with spare parts after i complete this project

also, im not liking my luck but im thinking about emailing KENWOOD USA to see if i can get my hands on some spare CN100 abd 16 pin screen plugs

 You luccky b*st*rd!. Sounds like you're making a lot more progress than I am. The seller of the unit I was contacting has gone quiet on me when I asked for pics of the wiring harness - so suspect that it doesn't exist!

Got a response from an Aussie wrecker

Unless your vehicle was fitted with Sat Nav originally a secondhand unit will not "plug & play" as the required wiring set up is not in the base vehicles. The entire loom is different between models. We have one from a 03/2009 Liberty EZ30RB

It's rather exxy, but may save some hassles.....

To be honest I was hoping for the "easy way out" but looks like that's not going to be possible.

Spoke to the original seller I was in contact with. He says they unplugged the unit. Didn't cut it out. So sounds like it might have been an accessory..... any tips for confirming.....he's sent me the vin of the car it came from.

Seems like a lot of mucking around to retrofit a factory unit but I guess its a few hundred bucks to get all the parts compared to 400 just for a double din fascia. Is the stock nav system any good? I can't stand the one in the fox cos it doesn't even give I street names.

This unit is from the JDM pre face lift models

There was a whole unit on IM i was looking at importing that someone snatched up for $70
That included the fascia panel, screen, DVD drive, antenna and all all of the power cables it needed to go together

The guy I spoke to on Friday said they unplugged everything, and claims all the wiring is there. He did mention that they unplugged cables all under the dash so sounds like the unit they have may be the accessory item in which case I should be good to go.

I'd like to know how the dealer optioned accessory is fitted though. Does it use the Op Port etc?

My electronics knowledge is very limited, so building my own harness is probably not going to happen.
