Aftermarket coilover springs

Postby t.renshaw34 » Mon Nov 05, 2012 10:30 am

So I have been inboxing and emailing people about what spring rates you can go up to on coilovers without needing to rebuild them.

the coilovers in question are BC BR's. stock F6kg R8kg.

Most people are saying you can go up 1-3kg from the stock spring rates. Going by that I would run something like F8kg R10kg.

Ideas??? as much as I read and learn I still know that im not a suspension guru.

If I recall correctly kiks had mentioned once the Ohlins rep would give warranty on anything up to just under 10k. You'd need to ask the BC BR dealers what they'd happily cover beyond the stock springs. I couldn't imagine a huge impact on longevity if you followed the recommended preload settings.

Personally I've got Eibach 400lbs/in (7.14kg/mm) front and 550lbs/in (9.82kg/mm) rears. I'm yet to completely punish them so can't say whether I've gone too far or not enough yet...

when getting my BC BRs i remember paul (Streettotrack) telling me that spring rates could be be ordered +/- 2, so yeah i guess F8 R10 would be fine

Fairly sure it's about 3kg front 4kg rear.

Soo... That should mean that coilovers should stop most tire rubbing in rear? I got 20" wheels and it can be a pain with the boot loaded up.

On a side note, 99% sure we just cruised past each other!

Depends if the tyre is tucked inside the guard or sitting flush/poking.
Post some close up pics of your rear tyres.

What size wheels n tyres your running?
Rolled the guards yet?

Bumping up this old thread...

I've been looking at a few different coilovers and comparing the spring rates.

Cusco Street Zero A's = 6kg front, 6kg rear (twin tube)
HSD AD's = 6kg front, 6kg rear (twin tube)
BC BR = 6kg front, 8kg rear (mono tube)
Pedders = 6kg front, 8kg rear (mono tube I think)
XYZ = 9kg front, 9kg rear (mono tube)

The Cusco's are really smooth and handle well (have been in a friends car who has them) - ordered from Japan, 1 year send back to Japan warranty
The HSD's are made to have stock smoothness with better handling (made in Korea, 1 year Australian warranty)
The XYZ's I've been told handle really nicely - not harsh at all (made in Taiwan, 2 years Australian warranty)

I quite like the sound of the HSD's for comfort, and the XYZ's for warranty. I'm just not sure about the spring rates. I'm assuming what works in one coilover, might not work in another?

I'm thinking that whichever coilover I get, to get the 6kg front and 8kg rear...

Thoughts?

Wondering if someone can explain the benefit of slightly stiffer springs in the rear? (eg: 6kg front and 8kg rear in the BC BR's), compared to say the BC V1's which have 6kg front and 6kg rear?

I'm getting Ohlins or Racecomps (just trying to decide). I don't like the oversteery nature of the stock set up. I want the car to be neutral as possible Should I be going for equal rate front and rear or heavier rear?

Curious to know the same thing... the stock is heaver in the rear, but a lot of the coilover setups are even front/rear, and some are even heaver in the front (like the ICS N1's which are 8kg front, 6kg rear...

The heavier rear spring rate is to balance out squat on power on through a corner

When you plant it, the weight shifts to the rear generally, so to improve rebound firmness, the stiffer spring rate in the rear allows weight to be transfered back to the front to eliminate oversteer
