No... but I have the iPod controller so I figure it's the same device?

What I want to check is, if the iPods with low output actually require a smaller load resistance to produce more signal.
So, I need to test this on one that's not loud enough :)

iPod Volume on EA1251

Postby colin » Tue Mar 18, 2008 7:50 pm

Correct, my iPod is old (Gen 3) so doesn't have the volume limiter function, sound check is definitely off and the EQ is also set to off. I don't believe that any of this stuff effects the level that the head unit sees. My understanding is that either an ipod will only give a digital audio stream or line level (ie not volume control dependent) output through a dock connector, therefore the settings within the iPod should not effect the audio that the clarion box is receiving.

Probably right..

Have you tried adding 'equalization' then?

I am finding with my McI that for proper commercial CDs (.wav?) I need to crank volume up at least 7-8 points to be reasonable level...is this common? Then of course going back to am or fm, have to turn it down again.

Yeah thats'a pita.. my experience with previous cars (stock and aftermarket hu's) has usually been the opposite, with FM requiring more volume and Cd's being loud enough at a decent level!

boo clarion!

does anyone know what type of outputs the mac uses between the deck and the amp?

Yes, there are 5 channels, using line-level differential connections.
It wouldn't be hard to make up a little interface board with 5 small audio transformers to convert these to the "unbalanced" inputs used by most other car audio equipment. You might even dispense with the sub woofer channel, and just feed four inputs to an external amp.
