DIY spring compressors?

Would using 2 or 3 duty ratchet straps be a useable substitute (possibly safer even) for proper spring compressors?

I can't really afford to have another tool that will very rarely get used. The hoard is getting chronic as is...
I'd rather hire or borrow it and return the favor - Melburn Cruisers are very community minded.
We're getting a good pool of tools to share in return for favors in Melbourne, I'm currently looking after/repairing a bearing press for a member.
Can't wait to use it...
But I also considered using ratchet straps as being potentially safer than legit spring compressors...

If the springs need to be compressed to go back in, they aren't low enough

Once saw a 240z strut top put a decent size dent in the roof of a mate's shed as the top nut was undone without spring compressors. Seriously could have hurt someone big time

i've undone them on their side with no compressors,
you jam the rattle gun on the nut, then push the lot up against a wall/ fence/ tyre
the spring then has to push the full weight of the strut, it only moves 2 inches
and two blokes holding down the spring to put them back on.
