Replacing/repairing SpecB rear driveshafts

Postby Viper » Thu Sep 13, 2012 11:41 am

Hi guys,

Looking for ideas, so anything is appreciated.
It appears that my left rear drive shaft is quite screwed and giving some nice clicking sounds when powering down out of a corner.

Easy fix I thought, and obtained two second-hand drive shafts and went to get them re-built.
Turns out for whatever reason, the rear driveshafts cannot be rebuilt. Fronts are no problem, but apparently you cannot get the cage for these shafts.
He suggested getting second-hand items and trying pure luck, however I don't like this idea as the spares I had sourced are no good (3/4 CV's are rooted).

Has anyone else run into this issue before and found a solution?
From memory the shafts are ~$450 each from Subaru locally, which seems abit steep.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks!

Ben

You can get brand new (non-genuine) ones on eBay for much less.

Last time I looked you could get 2 for $200 or $220 or something from one vendor.

Driveline services (business name) exist in most parst on East side of AUS. Look for their number and ask about replacement shafts/joints

Otherwise maybe - ring Sunspares at Yandina (Qld) and see what they offer. they have a website with an enquiry thing you can submit

Ebay only has/had fronts last time I checked.

I'll try this other mob.
Thanks.

Well, it looks like no-one does them for whatever reason. Tried several places, even spares and bearing manufacturers.

How annoying. Time to get reamed at Subaru I guess :?
Unless anyone else has a neat idea?

im a little confused over which car you actually have - is it an 06 model MY07 spec b 3.0? or MY06 3.0RB? Manual or auto?

if yours is an MY06 3.0RB 6 speed manual, then you can use any r160 based rear axles from a subaru

If same model but auto, then any pre\post facelift auto shafts will work

if facelift MY07 spec b, manual - youre stuffed or can look for a second hand set from wreckers

if auto post facelift, then any auto gen 4 lib shafts will work

Good luck mate

Hey Mick,

It's the R160 shafts (MY06 3.0RB Manual 6). I have one more lead to follow before needing to resort to Subaru.
Doesn't look too good though :-/

Just to close this topic, finally got my shafts rebuilt and back into the car.

Managed to locate a place with rebuilds the R160's and they are in Clayton (right next to where I work...so I could have saved alot of K's/time  )

Place is 'Statewide Driveshaft Services'. 21/14-26 Audsley St, Clayton.
Rebuild took a day and I spent just under 2hrs swapping over both shafts on the weekend.
Fairly straight forward with a 32mm, 19mm, 17mm and 14mm sockets and spanners.
A rattle gun helps too.

Thanks to those who gave some suggestions!
