Install rubber STi 'under lip'?

Postby blacktop™ » Tue Oct 09, 2012 8:25 pm

hi guys,

ive got a rubber STi under lip thing but not sure how to mount it. its second hand but hasnt been fitted before.

theres double sided tape attatched to it already but surely it needs more that that to be fitted? i also noticed it has screw/bolt holes in it but it didnt come with hardware. was it meant to? ive get plenty of hardware that i can help myself to at work anyway.

and lastly, its fairly twisted. did any of you guys need a heat gun or similar to help with the fitting to go in position and 'set' smoothly?

any tips would be appreciated :)

cheers

Sorry I've never fitted one, but bolt or screw the sucker on. Double sided tape won't last long. It'll either fall off in the sun or you'll loose your new trick bit on the first speed hump you come to. I lost a whole much bigger spoiler off another car and ran over it. Not cheap.

It's a bitch to install. I used a hairdryer to keep it warm as I slowly attached it starting from one side, all the way to the other. This took me the most time as it is hard to get it perfectly even as the STI lip isn't a straight edge, it's a curve.

Once it has been stuck on there were 8-10 plastic screws that needed to be screwed in to keep it firmly attached. I had to drill holes for these in the STI lip but I did it once the under lip was already attached so I knew where the holes needed to be drilled. I can take some photos if you think it will help?

EDIT: I'm assuming you are attaching this under lip to the actual STI lip and not to your bumper?

Install rubber STi 'under lip'?

Postby JDGT05 » Wed Oct 10, 2012 10:15 am

^^^ I used Rome for my installation advice.

I found it annoying as anything installing from the floor so ended up getting it up on a friends hoist and doing it. Much much easier, apart from that, like stated above, a little bit of heat gun love, and I used extra screws on top of the ones which were provided as I new it would cop a fair few scrapings and didn't want it coming off!

Let us know how you go!

I'll also clarify that I didn't do mine with the STI lip on the car, I removed the STI lip, I can't imagine how difficult it would have been with the lip on the car even with a hoist! Although at least that way it might make it easier to line it up properly...

thanks heaps for the tips guys :D

yeah im fitting it to the lip, not the bumper.

i used a mates hoist to fit the lip which was great cos it only took about 15 mins to install but i think i might remove the lip to fit the under lip.

will post up pics when im done 8)

cheers

Sorry if this reply is a bit too late, but Michael from Garage 88 fitted my one for me.

From the packaging, he just straightened it up and left in under the sun for a few minutes.
He lined it up and cut little triangles out of the rubber extension to where the curves would be under the front lip to help it bend.
Only used the double sided tape that came with it and it has stuck on pretty well even after a few scraps here and there.
It's quite flexible :)

To be honest once it was warm with the hair dryer I found it was really easy to shape it how I wanted to, but Phat is the king of installations so definitely try his method!
