Grinding noise at low Revs

Hey guys,

So today I fitted my new Cobb Short Shifter kit to my 3.0RB, I also took the opportunity to get the shift linkage bushings changed to cobb units also. Upon driving the car, I've noticed that there is a weird grinding noise at low revs (1500-2500rpm) this goes away as I accelerate through the rev range. I also noticed that inside the cabin, i can hear extra background noise coming from the car (not your usual idle) which goes away when I depress the clutch pedal...

Any ideas as to what this noise is caused by? Had a look under the car, nothing seems to be rubbing against the driveshaft etc, this also wouldn't explain the extra noises on idle...

Hey mate could it be your shifter is hitting this plate ( see pic ) i had to trim mine otherwise it would of rubbed against it and i would imagine vibrated and made some noise

Thank you for your response.

The mech said he made sure to trim this before installation, also the noise disappears as I progress through the rev range so that's what makes it confusing. The noise at idle is also weird as it disappears when the clutch is pushed...

After some heavyish research, I've concluded it could either a loose headshield or a throw out bearing on the way out. Here's to hoping with the former but expecting the latter =\

Anyone know how much it would cost to get this changed?

Expect the former and not the latter

Logic says that its the thing thats been fiddled with that will be the MOST likely source. Get the heat shields and work checked over

Throwout bearings take time to become a problem, weeks/months their noise slowly increases

Hey Tradewind,

I took the heatshield out on the weekend and had a look, work looks alright. Might look into getting the factory rear shift bushing replaced to hopefully reduce the noise.

Took apart the middle console to look at the short shifter itself, doesn't seem to hit anything through the shifts so that crosses that off
