MY08 Liberty tuned by STI announced

Nearly everything is in here to start with.
If it's about your car, or Subaru's in general, put it in "Subaru Chat".

interesting thread.....

at the end of the day we're all owning a lib.....what ever goodies you add on is your choice....

it IS kinda wrong of Subaru to continually have "limted editions" of cars....as i see that as a cheap way to sell more units.....for the people in management you guys would know that Head Office are only interested in the number you sell....how you do that is not their problem....

having said that car manufacturers make improvements to a particular model year on year.... so if i was to buy the STI i would prefer the new build instead of an old build  for a car in that price bracket you do start opening more options.....considering you're buying the lib for the luxury factor otherwise i guess you would go for the WRX right...????

anyway....we're all one big happy family :o

Sure buying the STi bits separately might not cost any less. But that's an damning indictment of how expensive STi bits are. Especially if you buy them through Subaru Australia. Using that as a basis for constructing a case to say the 'tuned by STi' car is good value for money is shakey. The reality is that over and above a standard GT / GTB neither proposition (buy a 'tuned by STi' or buy the STi bits yourself) represents good value for money compared to looking beyond STi bits and buying from the diverse and competitive aftermarket.

I think many people are forgetting exactly what was added to the TBSTi in 07 and if you did it all yourself even aftermarket you'd not come in that much cheaper:

STi Short shit gear linkage (I only found this out when I drove a GTB and it has a long throw)
Braided brake lines - yep price these up! (everyone only remembers the Brembos)
Brembos :)
Rear control arm links - aids turn in and reduces weight
2 x Stainless mufflers - ok prolly not the same as you'd buy aftermarket, but still buy 2 mufflers and theres $800
STi Strut brace
STi re-mappped chip (yes it does drive differently, albeit only 11kw CLAIMED more - but torque curve is vastly different)
Enkeis - lighter than stock - unsprung weight
STi lowered springs (better than anything King make)
Pirelli P zeros (not worth the $$ in my opinion but must be taklen into account)
Then the dress up bits (badges seat stitching and front lip), which no-one would probably count, fair enough.

Dunno about the others here, but mine was no-where near the $$ people are talkiing above a GTB (well under 10k)

Why wrote:Sti is a fine track car, not going to deny it , my old WRX used to mix it up with then all the time. (Sedan was not an option so had to make do with a Highly Modded WRX Hatch). All I am saying that is that Yes the STi liberty is a good package and if thats what your after so be it. But sometimes getting a lesser model and modding it can be a better option for some people.

Eg. If I was to go back to a Liberty for the wife it would probably be an STi Liberty. But for me who has to use my car for work and play I'd rather mod one up.

We are all on the same team. Hell we all purchased Libertys of sorts did we not.

PS I was going to get the new STi WRX Hatch but I dont like the look "yet".

Oh yeah I'm not into having my arse kissed either.

Not many people would buy a Liberty for the track - as nice as it is on the street - there's so many others I'd buy for a track car. Dont think mine will ever see a track - only some driver training venues at best.

Had my fun with great handling cars on the track (typeR, WRX, WRX STi, MX5) The Liberty would be too disappointing. But hey what a great Q ship for the street it makes

Horses for course and hence track rubber for the car has no appeal to me - nor noisy dak dak mufflers. And if I was serious about track rubber - I'd buy 17's that cleared the calipers and put track rubber on those and have two sets anyway

Not what I said was it ! Only that the cost would not be much cheaper, and then you have a car without warranty and less resale

- and we'll agree to disagree on Springs, Tyres and possibly tune (I'd call it a sub $1k tune ;) I wouldn't want to lose the pedal feel the STi map has)

To avoid disappointment, you shouldn't have done that.

The STi Liberty is good value IF you have a spec B and want to add the Enkei wheels ($3300- don't forget you're going to need 5 with the brakes) and Brembos ($5000- I seriously doubt you can get them for much less, and allocate some time or money to fit them).

You'll be wanting the lip and short shift too.

And springs.

Maybe a bit more go from the engine dept. while we're at it eh?

But if you have a spec B and are perfectly happy with it (and there's nothing wrong with that) or you have different plans for it (pimped, blinged, whatever) then the STi version looks horribly over priced.

All depends upon perspective.

Remember, we are all different and we purchase what we want and that that suits our needs and wants. Who cares what someone else really thinks.

Hell the Liberty in whatever form is a bloody nice car. Its not the flashest or the best track car or the fastest, its just a bloody nice car. Even my fathers base model is very nice to drive.

I love you all :D

Did not buy it as a track car, it was to be my the family truckster. Had thought I'd had enough of the track with cars and still at the time of purchase had a Superkart for fun. And on the 17's got sick of changing wheels with my last WRX I'm too old. Although its about 8 seconds a lap slower than my WRX at Winton it still manages to surprise a few people and gee its nice to drive.

This GT-B, was it faster or slower than a Tuned by STi?

Hmmm - this is your fault!

Define faster? I think if you mean a drag yes the MODDED GTB would win.

But hit a twisty and I'm not so sure once brakes and suspension are taken into account. However this particular owner will be addressing these shortfalls on the GTB as I understand he also is not satisfied with the stocker results (soft susp and brakes needing lines and pads plus mastercylinder brace, all un-neccessary in the TBSTi IMHO)

I guess the GTB in stock form didn't suit his needs either :D

Plus more importantly I know which is the more rewarding/satisfying to drive at this stage

Now stop this childish dick waving

Fair enough - we agree 0 ok for a quick squirt but not a serious contender.

BTW I ended up buying a compressor, large trolley jack (2 wheels suspended at once) and rattle gun. Wheel changes are a snack (and I'm old too) Mind you these days its more done on my Prado putting the serious offroad tyres on when going offroad

I must ask you since I was in Perth last week, do you have personalised plates? There was a Spotless Liberty STi sedan with plates I cant remember exactly but they were STi Lib or Lib Sti something like that. I only traveled between the Airport and the Peak Service station in Kewdale Rd Welshpool.

Yep likely was me and plates say GTB STI white on black background
