Timing belt kits

I've been browsing the internet for different timing belt kits and haven't had much success with Google so thought I'd try eBay:

EDIT - no I won't be buying this particular one but just want to know that I'm on the right track in my search.

not a technical guru by any means, but wouldn't it make more sense to stick with genuine parts? If this thing breaks, does the money you're saving here outweigh the risk / cost of repairs should the worst case scenario present itself?

Oh I want to stick with genuine or alternatively use an even better option. I just want to know that I'm on the right track in my search!

I'd buy genuine. An timing kit for 2.5 litre is somewhere late $300 if you have a friend in Subaru.

The price difference between genuine and non-genuine kits is negligible when it comes to timing belt kits. The big cost whack is actually the labour for installation.

When I did my timing belt earlier this year, the price difference on the kit was a whole $80 saving over Subaru's genuine gear, but the labour difference between getting Subaru to do it and my local mechanic was $600. I got my local to install the genuine kit (sourced from Subaru Parts at the normal consumer price) and feel a whole lot better for it - don't need to change it again for another 100,000K's (or three years - whatever comes first).

The Gates brand complete kit is awesome

Comes with all the idlers + belt which is actually marked with white dots to assist you with getting the timing correct

Changing the belt on a 2.5i is a 1.5hr job for any home mech with a few tools

There are few cars easier than the Subaru EJ 2.0/2.5 phase 2 engines

just curious, there is no difference between the belt layour for the gen2 RX 2.5 and the gen three and four are there?.... ive heard that there are pulleys that are in different positions on the different models and things that make a gen 4 2.5 belt kit incompatible with a gen 2. any knowledge would be greatly appreciated

With regards the water pump there's too many conflicting stories. Depends on coolant used etc....

Most agree that if your doing the timing belt best get it changed as it may not last till the next timing belt change. It's only $110 for the pump. Changing it in isolation, should it fail, will see a significant labour cost.

How do you find that site for price compared to locally sourced? Do you use it?
