Changing gearbox oil

Postby tangcla » Fri Jan 11, 2008 7:38 am

Has anyone changed the gearbox oil on an auto?
How much oil is needed, and what type of oil?

Thinking of doing a full flush... thoughts?

Reason I ask, is I've heard that it can take up to 12L of oil if you pump and do a total flush.

i've also heard that you need to use the OEM stuff, and that I shouldn't be using anything other than OEM gearbox oil.

Why flush AT fluid outside of the standard service intervals?

R U doing evil things like towing semi trailers or driving it on the beach?

Prob not a concern due to it being fairly new but im told by mechanic friends that total flushing is a no no.

Their reason is that the gears wear and the crap in the box is helping everything stay together so when you flush it all the box can die soon after.

Ive never experienced this, but ive never changed the oil in my box either. Im not saying it will happen but i suppose it could

Service interval is 100,000km before they touch the gearbox oil. That's an awful long time.

Im sure its fine. 100,000 would probe even be a safe bet. Woul prob last at leats 110,000 but there is a margin or error/time

Normal change is just valve chest and torque converter, which can be 6-8L (my 928 is 5.5L for this). A full flush would include the cooler and its lines, but this should only be a couple more Litres . People worry about full flushes as they can move debris in the cooler lines into circulation....
