Oil consumption and CEL flashing

Postby ScoobiBlue2 » Sun Jul 08, 2012 6:30 pm

Hi, my first post to this forum, just bought a my06 3.0r-b. Will post pics soon. Anyhow, bought vehicle 2 weeks ago from interstate. It had 41k on it and I have since done 2000 additional km's. However I'm a little concerned with oil consumption. After the long 1100km initial road trip the level dropped 2mm on the dipstick. Last 900 km level has dropped a further 3mm, so now the level is now around 2/3 full, so estimate approximately 1-1.5 litres of oil consumption. Suspect the previous owner nannied the car and now concerned that my engine is shite. It runs well and uses an average of 9.5litres petrol (98 oct) per 100km, so pretty good fuel economy. However I do notice a slight burnt slmell coming from under the car when I open the door and get out. Smell is strongest around door/ under car. Any ideas? Also suspect faulty/buggered battery may be cause of check engine light and flashing cruise light. I know that bad batteries can trigger CEL but I'm a little concerned with the flashing cruise light. Will this clear and reset with new battery? Car is under statutory warrant as a bought it from a dealer, but I live over 1000km away, so a little concerned that I may have a few isssues with the car. Interested in opinions from anyone with similar experience or knowledge. Cheers.

Are you actually replacing the lost oil....you say it's 2/3 full. Does this mean you haven't?

No haven't replaced oil yet, deciding whether to use a 5/40 or 10/40-50. Oil level still above half way on the dip stick so not concerned yet. Will get some tomorrow when I get a new battery.

UPDATE: Replaced battery and all lights cleared, just as I thought. Oil top up this morning, ~500ml used for 2000kms. Will keep an eye on this in the meantime 8)

Use 15W40 or 10W40 magnatec

the oil level that's actually on the stick is bugger-all
they hold 6.5 litres anyway so half a litre is nothing
