New Battery. 200rpm idle.

Postby Nick3.0R-B » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:50 pm

G'day lads.

Had a flat battery yesturday so had racv come round and replace it

Checked my voltage for the batter and with the alternator and it's perfect.

Now when stationary its at low idle it's at about 200rpm.

I reset the ecu and checked the connections to battery and engine hoses.. And it still is doing it.

Any ideas??

No ideas but every chance that in one week it could be running fine.

Disconnect the battery, wait for a few minutes and then reconnect it. The first time you restart the engine turn the ignition to ON but do NOT turn over the engine. Wait 15 seconds for the ETC/IACV to home itself. Now start the engine and let it idle without any load (lights, AC, etc). After a couple minutes the idle RPM will go up by about 100 RPM. After another couple minutes it will do it a gain etc. until it reaches the correct idle.

Is it possible to idle at 200rpm without stalling? :?

My 1989 Colt with a carby idled very low on occasions, sometimes it looked like it was at 100rpm, other times it literally didn't move the tacho, sputtered around every 2 or 3 seconds, touch the throttle and it came to life perfectly fine. I found it happened very spasmodically, sometimes it would only do it once only, if you touched the throttle it would idle normally afterwards. I just thought it was bloody cool so I never looked into it!

I would start by taking the car for a nice long drive to get it hot and with a few stops here and there so It can relearn all its systems. If it doesn't help then spray a can of Subaru Upper Engine cleaner through the throttle body, rev it a bit until the smoke clears, then let it idle for 5 minutes. If its still Idling low then I would again disconnect the battery, let it sit for an hour, then reconnect the battery, turn the ignition to the ON position but WITHOUT starting the engine let it sit for 30 seconds. Then crank the engine and let it idle for 10 minutes before taking it for another 10-15minute drive so it can relearn everything again.

Failing that you will need to see a workshop so they can check for engine codes and make sure everything is working fine, if so then Subaru can electronically raise the idle using their Subaru Select Monitor 3.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.
