Safety of Tuning MY07 GT and best place to go.

Postby GreyGT » Tue Jun 05, 2012 10:27 pm

Hi All,

I bought a MY07 Manual Liberty GT three months ago and now it’s time for a little more speed. I don’t need a horsepower hero, just something that feels quick to drive without revving it to the moon.

I’m considering a Dump Pipe and a tune.

I spoke with All Drive Subaroo and was told that it is not safe to tune or modify the 2.5 Turbo engine (something about blowing the ringlands)which doesn’t seem right to me given the amount of people who seem happy a while after having work done – do many people experience problems 50-100k after modifying their 2.5T Lib’s?

I’m hoping people will say no so that I feel more comfortable getting the modifications done, which brings me to the next point – where have people had good experiences with having their Lib modified? I’ve spent many hours researching and have come across good and bad reports for every player in the market. Is there a general consensus on who is the best in the Sydney area? I’ve read the least negative reviews about MSR and a sh*tload of bad reviews on Pulse.

Thanks.

Who did you speak with Nazi or Norrie? They should be able to tune it no drama... He was going to tune mine...

I heard the same bullshit when I enquired about buying a new short block, I was told that the boxer engine will always detonate no matter how you tuned it and the only way to fix it would be to spend 10k on forged bottom end. He refused to quote me for short block and instead sent me a quote for forged rebuild for 10k….. no details regarding what parts would be used, he wasn’t even concerned that retune would be required.

Needless to say I took my business elsewhere………..

I’ve been told both others in the industry that All Drive Subaroo don’t like dealing with modified cars and don’t have any tuning capabilities

I would steer clear of Pulse racing…….. I have a 2.5 short block paper weight to prove why and I know of a another tb sti with less that 30k which had the same issue due to the bull shit tune……. Many others have had issues with him locking ECU’s without being told and his ability to safely tune cars has been questioned by many people in the industry.

A dump pipe, high flow panel filter and tune only, will give a nice low end punch, add a full turbo back exhaust to that equation you’ll get a nice responsive drive throughout the rev range.

If you haven’t already you should contact Phat GT not only for parts but tuning options and contacts.

One thing to note the 2.5t were known to be a little problematic when compared to the 2.0t, issues with big end bearing and blown head gaskets, I’ve seen a few 2.5t with less than 30k on clock suffer from big end bearing issues and when the engine was striped it was clear that detonation was the cause.

Phat GT has built a number of unopened 2.5t and 2.0t pushing away from 200-270kw atw with the right parts and more importantly the right tune it’s possible.

Be warned it starts with a dump and tune and somehow you’ll end up with a bigger TMIC, upgraded fuel system, better brake, suspension mods…………

I also recommend Phat. His email is listed in the Traders section. Whilst I don't live in Sydney, He has helped me many times. He has also talked me out of being a dodgy tight arse many times too.
Kinda flush. Fitment is something. ADM as F*ck.

The phat man seems to have a really good rep on here. Ive never dealt with him. My dealing (positive only as there would need to be another 'Rant' thread on the negative) is with NRG automotive at rydalmere. I have dealt with Nick for almost 10years now and he is the only person that i would take my car to for anything small or big. NRG was the other big name 7-8years ago in the subaru world. I still trust him with anything that i have taken him and will take him. I find him to be a no bullshit type of guy when it comes to mods. He will put on the fully sick flux capacitor if you want to make your extra 0.34 killerwasps. But if you want honest advice from experiance then he is awesome. When i took my STI in to get it checked over, we chucked the AFM decive to check the tune and it was sitting at 12.5. Now i dont know my 12.5 to my 9.6 but nick said that he doesnt feel 'comfortable' with it being that lean and likes them to sit around 11.5-11.8 to be on the safe side as its a dailey driver and thats what he tunes his cars to. He treats my cars like they are his own and how he want his treated and you cant ask for better then that, unless you are mega anal.

Thats my 2c

Dan

Yeah, Norrie is a great guy... He is the type of bloke that will tell you straight up yes it can be done or no it is impossible... When they "tune" they take the car out for a road tune and not on the dyno unless specified... I have known Nazi and the boys for a very long time and i have never had any dramas with them... Everyone has their opinions but he basically put my old 200kw RS Turbo together no dramas... Norrie has plenty of experience coming from FHI Japan... Bang for buck they are ok... You just have to say yes i know what the oucomes will be if i tune my car... There are always possibilities of things breaking on machines... But yeah, first timers will always get that impression from him advising that they don't want to modify cars as they are a Authorised Subaru Repair Centre...

See Sean at S&J here in Adelaide.

It's a bit of a drive but you can stock up on some wine while you're here! :D

August 2011 - completely stock with no intention of any upgrades

Oct 2011 - 3" tbe, fuel pump upgrade, air filter and ecu reflash

Dec 2011 - upgrade turbo, injectors, fmic, intake, exh etc - retune

Jan-Apr 2012 - facelift conversion

June 2012 - 6 speed manual conversion

June - dec 2012 - forged motor seeking 350kw atw

It starts with a dump pipe and tune, and quickly turns to this ^^^^

In terms of original question - Norrie is a good guy but doesnt know shit performance wise from my experience

Paul used to be very good, but dont know what happened there

Go see phat, and he will put you in touch with someone highly recommended (has tuned over 20 cars from here minimum and a few more to go)

And down the rabbit hole we go. Mick's practising his conversion skills so he can do the same on mine in a year or so
