Best tyre on 18x8.5 rims

Postby turbolag » Thu May 24, 2012 6:35 pm

Hey guys,

Before you grill me for not doing a search on this topic I HAVE searched everywhere... there seems to be a lot of contredictry information both on the site and on the web in general

So here is is What is the Best ( great grip, little tyre roll, not needing to pump guards ) tyre size for 18x8.5 rims and what brand? According to the thread (viewtopic.php?f=12&t=98) the choice seems to be 235/35/18 which would have been my thoughts given that its going to be the widest, most accurate (speedo), closest to rim size (little tyre roll) choice without rolling guards. HOWEVER my choice for tyre would be Kumho ku36's for both grip and price but of course they don't come in that size.

So i am in need to accurate information about the above mentioned. If it matters the rims are "Rota Gravel's"

offset along with tyre size (and ride height/camber) determines if your guards would need to be rolled.

ill assume that your car is standard height and you haven't adjusted your camber because you dont want to roll your guards.

so what is the offset of the wheels? cos that will probably have the biggest influence on what tyre size you can run.

Correct, not camber/suspension/ride bight changes except a rear 22mm sway bar but that shouldn't effect anything. The offset is +44

235's are pretty wide on an 8.5inch 18inch 44 offset, fronts are gonna have some poke...

Depends on the offset of your rims too. learning to read :)

I have 235 on an 8.5 +35 rim and I like it. 245 will require work.

Edit: also, when I go lower I will need to roll guards. Front might need a little camber too.

[EDIT] Due to my retardo rim measurement skills I now find out I actually have 7.5 +45 with 235s.

How much room is the left in your guards? Enough to get my +44 under the fronts? Of you think I'll scrub out?

I'm not scrubbing now with no guard work at all on teins. So a bit lower than stock.
The tyre is pretty much level with the guard so will definitely rub when I lower it.

But you have an extra 9mm on the outside than me due to offset so you should be right with a guard roll at most.

I have some pics of how far out it comes but not on this computer.

Edit: rear should be ok.

I have ku39 and like them.
They aren't in the same category as the 36 though.

What size are the stock tyre on your car? On mine 235/40 would be good for 18s. 235/35 would be too small.
Also is there any difference in guard space between pre and post facelift?

215/45or40/17 I think. I think the 40's might be a bit high. In the above link I'm pretty sure is says 35 would bs best but I'm happy for a second opinion

Deff 215/45/17

I have 235/40/18 on 18x8.5 +38 rolled rear guards and -3 camber all round and I'm struggling to the point where I'm going 225s

My rear is pretty low already and I can't see myself having any trouble there.
When I get coilovers and the front comes down I know it will require some effort.- will use camber, guard roll and maybe a little guard pull/flare.

There are people in here running 245 but maybe not at this offset.

ok so after much research i ordered 4x kumho ku36 245/35-18 and according to everything i read they should fit without rolling the guards or scrubbing out in most cases, worst case senario they don't fit and ill have the get the guards rolled.... Anyone know what sort of money thats worth?

P.s on another note i got my car back from the mod shop today, new turbo installed :)
