Bonnet Catch not Catching!

Postby BaSeLine » Sun May 20, 2012 11:09 pm

As soon as pulled the lever tab from within the car to open the bonnet, it did not return to it's position...and several minutes later after opening and closing the bonnet, it did not catch!

Anyone know or experienced this problem or know how easily it could be fixed?

My bad luck today..I just wanted to get rid of some leaves that blew in to the bonnet scoop...and this happens!!!!

Do you put the bonnet down and push it to catch, or do you drop it? I would try spraying the catch with crc/wd40/rp7 etc. Then drop the bonnet from about half way down. If it doesn't shut maybe your cable or pop lever need lubrication as they could be sticking open.

Make sure you don't have any tools on the sills of the engine bay first ;)

Check and inspect the latch closely - if it feels 'loose' then its faulty.

andrew, sounds like when you first pulled the lever from inside the car, it 'locked' onto the unlatch position... ok my parent's old car (bless its soul - if it had one), the problem was the cable attached between the lever & latch being 'dry' & rusty... have you checked that?

I've gone to a mechanic whilst getting my pink slip and he says the cable must be caught somewhere cos no signs of broken cables. I suspect its the additional wiring from my new horns being jammed in together with bonnet release cable under the frame. I ll have to pull it out and reroute.

haha, imagine your horn sounding when you try to pop the bonnet... or worst, your bonnet flying up when trying to beep your horn

As funny as it is unfortunately that wouldn't happen as the horn is an electronic wire, and the bonnet cable is a cable that physically moves to open the bonnet catch.

But I love the Idea, might need to wire up an actuator to Taylor's bonnet catch and wire it into his horn pad! haha! Flying past people at 140km/h on a blind corner, beep the horn in rage and WHAM! Bonnet to the face lol!!!!!!

I knew that, just thought it would be a funny thing if it actually could happen.

(just quickly - offtopic) Speaking of horns, are the Liberty horns grounded to sound or energised to sound?

All the horns up to post facelift Gen 4 have one side connected to ground, so the active wire is pulled to 12V to sound them.
I can't imagine the later ones are any different, as you have to run an extra wire to work the other way.
