people say theyre copying wheel styles. yes i agree. but you need to remember in the end a wheel has the stud holes in the middle and a barrel/lip on the outside. theres only so many combinations of spokes and shapes to join the two together...
my wedssports are 10 spoke, semi-curved spokes. fairly similar to advan RZ when you look at them. so are mine copies?

A lot of wheels have "similar" designs to others, but then they have theyre own designs also.

Rota's dont have their own designs in aftermarket wheels, their whole range is copies as close to the genuine article as legally possible.

before i read this, i was living in an innocent, naive Rota-happy world....now I dont like the fact that i simply bought them on price and look - without even having a clue about how weight etc affects ride quality....

now i want Rays VOLK TE37 Super Laps....thanks guys...thanks...bye bye $$$!!! lol

so, my question - can i even get these for my 06 Wagon? been struggling to find much on the net - except for the dude with the crazy blitzen on stancenation!
what size works for our libs? i currently have G-Force 18x8.5 +44 with 235/40/18 rubber- about to roll guards this week in prep for some coils - could do with new tyres soon too, so if necessary will change rubber width - advice please!

and again...thanks for destroying my blissful cheap existence!! lol!

but i guess its cos i trust tony, jerome and cruisn's comments and advice theyve given me in the past (and now i know why you guys didnt really get pumped when i was at Phats with my new Rota's!! i couldnt figure it out initially lol)

plus, it confirms the "loss" of handling (only slight) i felt from day 1 with the new rims and wider tyre width - i honestly didnt know much about anything (still have so much to learn) but having not had done any research about rims and handling, i didnt attribute it to quality & weight etc - pretty dumb i know...

Anything with 5x100 pcd will fit on the hub.

Rim width and offset, along with tyre width determine if they will fit under the guards.

This calculator will tell you how much extra your desired setup will stick out in all directions compared to stock.

If you search around you'll also find pics of people running 9+ inch rims so you can see how they fit and what size tyres they went with.

Have owned a set of ROTA Grids and Varrstoen 2.2.1 (anotherimitation wheel) in 17x9 +12 and +15 (plenty of overhang from hub) for around 2 years on my drift car before I sold it... the car was tracked every month or so, bounced off ripple strip and given a general hiding as one would expect from a drift car. I never had an issue. Wheels never lost air, cracked or bent largely (nothing a balance didnt fix anyways).

Have also owned a set of Zeit, SSR reverse Mesh, Riverside meshies and Work mesh rims aswell.... They all copped the same abuse and I spose if you were to x-ray the rims I would imagine the Rota and Varrstoen rims may be nearing the end of their life spans but to be honest for what I paid and the hiding they were given I couldnt be happier.

As you can imagine with a drift car the suspension was rock solid, had a roll cage, locked diff, 40 series tyres and all the other goodies to make the car stiff as a board. End of the day 1 bad review or problem will spread like wildfire but nobody really ever hears the good reviews.

I agree with people saying they are ripping off designs which takes money from manufactures that spend all the time with R&D... but there is a market for cheaper wheels, hence how Tempe tyres stay in business. Varrstoen and Rota funnily enough put a bit of money into motorsport through companies such as Cartel who are stockists and pump decents amounts of coin into the drift scene.

End of the day these wheels have their place and really are bang for buck. If you like them buy them.

Will I happily run them? yes.
Are they the same quality as an SSR, Work or similar? well no and they dont try to be.
Are they heavier? yes and this will put very little extra stress on your drivetrain but really... unless your in time attack
you dont need to worry about this... and if you are and you cant afford the good stuff re-asses your situation.

haha Jerome! na, definitely all good- i will be happier knowing im going maximum quality with the parts i have...plus the Volk TE37 SL's look so sweet...and are such good quality - i know i will be even happier!
am doing some serious research on getting them...so if it all works out i'll definitely not be hating but thanking you fellas for this thread!

re: rotas.. can only speak from personal experience but:

one of my best mates has been drifting on rotas for the last 4 years.. same set... the would have seen at least 50 track days.. hundreds of sets of tires.. hasnt had 1 single issue..

another mate has a set of a time attack set up evo8MR.. again, many track days.. again no problems..

i think paying $2000, $3000 etc... for a set of rims is retarded.. unless you have way too much cash..

unless you NEED light weight, forged nigh on unbreakable rims for the track...

or

You have done every other conceivable thing performance wise to your car... then you can claim the "my wheels are a performance part" card..

for 95% of people, there will be no performance difference (that you will notice) between wheel brands (comparing equal width, size, offset etc..)

if you want to spend thousands of dollars on rims, great.. but please dont try to claim that you did it for the "performance gains" unless you actually know what you are talking about and not just quoting mechanics, forum chatter etc...

i would personally buy a set for a few reasons:

1. because i give absolutely 0 fuck about the whole JDM yO! thing..
2. i give 0 fuck about the "I love your FAKE wheels" brigade..
3. i give 0 fuck what strangers on the internet think about my wheels
4. they are cheap, have lots of good (albeit stolen) designs
5. there are seemingly endless amounts of other things that your money could be better spent on..

eg.. rotas for $900 or Te37's for $2500.. not taking into account tires.. say a $1600 difference.. that can go towards: exhaust, coilovers, ECU, swaybars, driveline upgrades, crack and hookers.. whatever..

the question to ask yourself is: do you car enough about what a bunch of people on the internet say to spend thousands extra.. just to impress them??

sure if you can spot the differences a mile away, know each line of your dream $3000 wheel.. then you wont be happy with rotas... but chances are if you like their styling.. you will be just as happy as with any other brand name wheel..
