I find it hilarious and alarming at the same time, that some would put cost before performance of a critical component, like wheels in this case cause they can’t justify the price……If you can’t afford to change the part then stick with what you got.

Are they really as bad as you make them out to be??

They probably aren't as bad as people are making out, no, however I have seen a few cars with Rotas on them, and for anyone who knows anything about cars you can tell they are an imitation wheel. Park a car with rota gravels next to a car with sti enkeis and you can easily see the difference in quality and fitment. Of course if all you care about is impressing people who know nothing about cars, it's fine, but isn't your car about you?

If you're the kind of person that buys imitation iphones from China then rotas are for you. It's like buying a Chrysler 300C. Everyone knows you bought it because you wish you could afford a Bentley.

However, for the P platers I can understand why you wouldn't think it's worth it to put expensive wheels on your car, but the smarter thing to do would be to save your money alltogether and wait until later in life when you have a car that IS worth buying the best parts for Believe me there is no need to rush things in life, I drove around in a civic hybrid for 3 years while on my p's and was the butt of all my friends jokes before getting my current car, and had enough money saved to do all the mods I wanted to do!

for me i dont understand the need to have them right then and there. if you are already saving for wheels why not save for a bit longer and get the quality stuff.

i have had mates who have bought rotas as an inbetweener wheels while selling off and waiting for their next set to arrive and they have cracked them from everyday driving

But there's also the other side of the coin - if you are never going to track your car and seriously put it through the grinder, then do you really need the high-quality genuine article? I personally like my Rota's - they look good and give me the space to put my Brembo's on. Despite all the posts on the pros and cons not just here but on other forums, I'd probably never take my Rota's onto the track and get a second set of wheels specifically for track use.

Back in my WRX days I used to have a set of genuine (very expensive!) Oz Racing Prodrive rims for the street and used the OEM wheels for the track. I should have done it the other way around from day dot because the OEM wheels literally warped out of shape after about 6 months of supersprints. Folliowing that, a full year of track days on the Oz Racing rims and they were still as straight as a bullet, so yeah - quality matters depending on intended application.

But would I buy Oz Racing again for street use? No - they're too expensive. Give me imitation wheels instead if I'm after the looks.

This is precisely my logic, Jeff. It's all about context - and for me, I can't justify forking out $3500+ on rims that I'll never track or subject to a heap of abuse.

Hyrax I mistook yours for STI wheels in a picture, however I have seen the gravels in real life and could tell the difference straight away.

Alessandro which wheels are you talking about that cost that much? The STI wheels can be had from Phat for just under $2,500 last time I checked (including shipping).

Further, Hyrax my point wasn't about tracking the wheels. I was talking about looks as well. I wouldn't put imitation anything on my car because I'd know they were imitation so it defeats the purpose of buying wheels that are for the appearance. If it's about impressing people who don't know much about cars then the rotas will serve you fine.

Jerome, this price was for a set of Advan RS 18x8 +45 which included shipping. Connoisseurs are going for a similar price (Deluded's set for example)

To be perfectly honest, I strongly dislike the idea of buying things just to seek the tick of approval/validation from others. I'm happy to buy things on which I individually assess their merits, regardless of what people think.

After all, isn't the whole point about one's car or anything that represents a part of someone is that you should do it for you, not for anyone else? If you geniunely want the real deal then I have no problem

Point taken, but when you buy rims to make your car look good are you telling me that it is ONLY for when you look at it? It has nothing to do with showing your beast off to other people? Because from where I sit I'd say the majority of people who would buy nice rims for their car do it for themselves, but also to show them off to people who can appreciate the work they have done to their car. I just wouldn't want imitation wheels representing a part of me, that's my personal preference.

To be honest, if I had enough money to play with, I'd get a set of coilovers and a set of gunmetal Advan RSs in a heartbeat but at the moment, still undecided. Knowing me, I'll probably just leave the stockies on until I get tempted again in the future

That's why I haven't bought BC coilovers yet...waiting til I can afford to drop some money on cusco, tein or zerosports coilovers

Trust me, keep the stockies on and just start a "mods saving account" and put aside small bits of money on a weekly basis. Eventually you'll be able to afford the rims you want!
