Rotas...tell me everything

I'm having an argument with my brother over Rota wheels - I'm for them, he's against.

His arguments:

- Cast instead of forged
- Made in Philippines not Japan

= poor quality.

I think this is pretty piss poor so I'm asking anyone who either owns them or has any experience with them to weigh in their opinion here.

I myself am attracted to the design, mostly of the G Forces (would LOVE to be able to afford Conoisseurs but it just ain't happening, plus they're long out of production ) and significantly, the price.

i am agianst them because they copy other companies designs

Do a search. There was a thread up not long ago that had a write up on a guy with a R35. got somw rota rims and flooged them at the track all day. He put them in a x ray and didnt find a fault with them.

Sounds like rota promo to me, why would someone who bought an R35 put rota rims on it, surely he could afford genuine rims not replicas!

How's it irrelevant?
if you take away any cushioning from other components you're putting much more stress on the rim.

combine that with a cast-alloy rim that will crack (instead of just deforming like a steel rim would) and you'll get failures.
How wide they are and what offset will also affect how much stress you're putting on them too
especially with +48 and +55 offsets you've got a lot of wheel hanging off the inside of the hub. making it easier again to bust the inside lip area

18x8.5 +44 with 235 somethings to maintain the oem rolling diameter of the 17's.

Coilovers at a good everyday height like my GT.

obviousoly not 100% copy, but so similar in design that you'd be pressed to tell them apart across the carpark

rather by real then copies.

as to above clearly the works have more spokes.

you can find awesome rims on YJ and import them for the same price as rotas if not less

I can clearly see the differences in the above wheels, markedly different imo, but my attention to detail is somewhat higher than others.

+1 to Neni's comments about Yahoo Japan.

exactly to some people they "look the same" and will do

to others each wheel is like a work of art and the finish, shape etc is unique to that wheel and enjoy the wheel for more than "it looks sick on my car broooooo"

Agreed about the difference in those wheels. I'm very particular about such things though.

Also, I don't think low profile tyres and stiffer suspension should be much of a factor for wheels marketed as performance wheels.

I don't have a problem with Rota Wheels at all, I even bought myself a set to play around with its fitment and appearance.
Although I initially bought them with the intention of selling them right after I get my dream wheels, I will now be keeping them as my spare set.

I don't think Rota reproducing other wheel designs as a really bad thing. I'm sure other wheel companies inspire each other when it comes to great design like the: SP1's and S1R's or LM's and VSXX's
I love Work SP1's and they will be my future set but I can't ignore that the wheels mentioned above closely resemble each other.

But I'm sure everyone has they're own opinion about wheel branding and design

Don't know about you guys, but I personally can't afford $4000+ for a set of TE37's... I do see where people are coming from about copying designs, but I think a lot of people are thankful there's an affordable set of wheels out there in designs that are usually very expensive. Especially for P platers like myself who don't have big powered cars. Plus there's brands out there like the TE37 rip offs that have stickers in the same font as the rays volk stickers that actually say 'ravs vork'. That i feel is something to be ashamed of and to completely avoid (if common sense does not prevail prior to actually considering these wheels) as they are intentionally trying to look EXACTLY like the originals.

If you save and are patient enough to wait and find the wheels I don't see why you can't buy genuine. Don't think you are looking in the right places

I find it hilarious and alarming at the same time, that some would put cost before performance of a critical component, like wheels in this case cause they can’t justify the price……If you can’t afford to change the part then stick with what you got.

BTW that test with a GTR and Rota track wheels is floored….. of course a cheap and nasty wheel will survive “a” track day…. Most tracks are well maintained and don’t have pot holes…. Did they post track times for test???, that would clearly tell if the driver was actually pushing the wheels to the extreme or not.
