Suggestions on Headrest DVD Players for Gen V

Hi All,

Just wanted to find out everyones thoughts and if they have had any luck with inbuilt DVD Players with replacement headrests? I have been told before I can continue spending money on mods that I need to get on to this and organise this for the kids, especially with the trip at the end of the year to Queensland with a few stop overs on the way home to see family on the way back down the coast.

Just trying to work out:

How hard it is to do?
What to look out for with possible issues with screens?
Can I hook it to be able to play out via a DVD in the Navigation screen in the front? (Once Handbrake Hack in place)
Success with different file types?
Maximum HDD sizes that can be plugged in? (its a long trip so ripping all the DVD's to MKV would be a nice option)

Currently we have the ones that velcro on but don't want the damage that they caused on my previous car from them.

Any suggestions woud be great

The 9" at Frankies looks beter to me. I will be getting some soon as well

Or there are a heap of cheap ones on E-Bay for a few hundred. You get what you pay for with these though.

Is there ones that have the cables that run down through the seat and if they can is it possible with the Gen V Liberties?

I would like to keep it as clear of an install as possible and hence not have the cables running down the outside of the seats. I don't mind running one cable from the centre console to under one of the seats to have them all plug in to. I would of liked a large drop down from the roof but then the arguments over what to watch would out weigh that I guess.

These should all be able to be hard wired through the seats and I'm pretty sure there is AV out to run the rear screens-
Bigger job though to remove head unit, rewire and connect that way.
I can't see the benafit when each headrest works indipendantly and it's just for the kids in the back anyway.

They have lots of features and are also touchscreen. I got them installed in about 2 hours but could do it quicker now I know how. All wiring runs down through the seats and across under the centre console where I tapped into the back of the 12V outlet for a power source. Have given them a quick test run around town, my 7 & 9 year olds gave them the double thumbs up. Haven't used them on a long trip yet but no doubt they'll do the job.

They look pretty good... How was the install through the seat... I have to look up a manual about pulling the seats apart. Do you have al link or was it just a bit of pulling on the kick covers on the back of the seat and all was good?

This one also looks pretty good as could then zip up the covers when not in use.

The seat backs are easy to get off. There is a cloth/carpet type "flap" attached to the bottom of the plastic seat back. Mine were attached under the seat with elastic loops that once released, give access to 2 securing screws. Remove these and with a bit of gentle squeezing on both sides to release the clips you can then pull the seat back downwards and off. Remove the factory headrests and slide in the DVD ones, running the cabling through first. You will need to use the supplied plastic spacers to ensure a snug fit as the poles were a little undersize compared to the factory ones. Then you simply route all the cabling up underneath the centre console. I removed the gearshifter and surrounding panel, including the cupholders which revealed enough space underneath to attach the power wires to the back of the 12V socket and then roll up the excess AV cabling neatly. A quick test before re-assembling everything and you're away. I did some searching on the net and found all the necessary info on removal of the seat backs and centre console. One of the easier car audio/electrical installations I've undertaken I have to say. Hope this helps in your decision...

Just bought a set off Ebay, I'm heading up to QLD for xmas and was going to fly the missus and kids up, but the costs of tickets = DVD players.
Will install next week I hope or whenever they turn up.
Have watch a heap of videos on them so it should be a cinch.....I hope

Once you install the first one which should only take about 30 minutes the other will be very quick. I didn't go with the hardwiring to the back of the 12v outlet as I like to have the easy control with my kids to have them not working when I am sick of them being on.
