If the Violet/White and Orange/White SWC wires are present on B36, you'll need to tap them (at any convenient location between B36 and the steering column). Splice in new wires that can reach from there to i26.

At i26, you'll want two new wires with pins that will fit. You can get those from another car being parted out (any ~1995-2007 Subaru's radio harness and the power harness for a McIntosh amp use the same pins).

You can also get them from an aftermarket "reverse" radio harness (such as Metra 71-8901). That is the type you would use to install a factory radio into a different car (or to repair a damaged factory radio harness).

If the SWC wires are not present at B36, I'm afraid you will have to add them to harness B68 at the steering column. That is the same type of mod that we must do on North American 2005-2007 models when adding SWC buttons to a car where they weren't factory-installed.

Still looking for a 2008 service manual (or at least the pages that show where harneses are located).

Aside: It would also be nice to see the diagrams for the integrated satnav (the type that has the map DVD slot on the front). I suspect that type won't be too difficult to "transplant" into a car that originally had the non-nav HU.

Installed steering wheel controls, not working HELP

Mmmmmmm So in theory b36 should be there as it takes the BW to the illumination light system ?? Correct
Now the question is where is b36 behind the steering wheel I bet. Anyone seen an orange/white and a violet/white wire behind the steering column

Thanks for the link, but that is the set I found...

That 2007 wiring file is identical to one I already had (which was said to be USDM -- from the "vacation pix" thread on LegacyGT.com). In any case, they do not show RHD cars (and don't even show a model with the McIntosh HU, for that matter). We really need to see the pages that cover Steve's, to help track down the location of harness B36/i1.

Installed steering wheel controls, not working HELP

Postby sjm69 » Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:30 am

Had a look under the steering column this morning for b36 harness no luck as yet . Would it only have a BW coming in and out if the swc wiring does not exist at all ,or could the BW be on a different harness and B36 is just not in my car ???

B36 will definitely be there (whether or not yours has the SWC wires). There are many many other important wires on that 28-pin harness. A page in the wiring diagrams typically only shows the wires needed for the particular circuits that page covers. So your 'satellite switches' page only shows 3 out of about 18 wires actually populated (out of 28 poles possible).

The 2004 diagrams that I have show both LHD and RHD models. Your car's B36/i1 are mirrored from LHD -- they're on your driver's side. The diagrams show B36/i1 fairly high up, on or near the firewall and above the steering column. It may be a bit tough to reach (or even see). But the alternative is removing all of the plastic and metal panels from below the steering column that block access to the wires going into B68 -- into the "clockspring" (roll connector).

Here's trabbic's thread that shows how to open up those panels on his 2005 spec.B: How to Install Steering Wheel Radio Controls

Fortunately, you won't have to open up the wheel itself -- that part has already been done.

Here's a picture of a similar harness in an Impreza. The number and colors of the wires are different than yours, but this will give you an idea of how the plastic connector actually looks. In fact, you could find more than one that looks like this, so be sure you find the one with the two SWC wires in the correct spots.

(click to see larger image -- actually only 800 x 600)

The bundle of wires may be wrapped in tape up until very near the plug.

:yahoo: Awesome!

So... don't keep everyone in suspense. Where did you end up finding the wires to splice into?

For anyone else who wonders, this is nothing to do with the SWC issue.

Hi folks

I've got an 08 Liberty Heritage with the same 6 stacker Mcintosh (PF-28241) as sjm69. I've just bought and fitted the SWC controls (part # 83154AG001), but can't get the damn things to work. I've searched the forums and web trying to find a solution, but have been getting nowhere.

I've checked the back of the head unit and it has the same 14 pin connector that is in one of the pics in this post, and have tried connecting 2 wires from pins 3 and 9 to what I thought was the feed coming out of the buttons, but i cant get it to work.I don't think i have the right connector that i've been trying to tap into.

Anyone have any suggestions? I've spent the past 4 hours trying to find the feed from the buttons to tap into but just can't seem to find it. Or am i missing some other part i need? Or have i done my cash......
