Knocking noise

Hey all,

I have an issue with my liberty. When I turn right it has a mild knocking sound.I have already changed the cv joint which was stuffed and the wheel bearing.

Could it possibly be the steering rack or suspension?

Any ideas would help cause I'm lost!

I have the same problem, at a slight turn and over any sort of mediocre bump, I get a knocking noise predominantly from my drivers side but also my passenger at times. I believe I am up for having my Billy's reconditioned..

I thought cv's however I replaced them in the front left where the noise was from and don't get me wrong it is much less however it is still there. I have feeling its reconditioning time for billys to.... Sounds expensive.

Strut top bolts, lca bushes, swaybar links or d bushes.

I know this sounds crazy but check if your engines mounted properly.

After my last visit to subaru to fix a snapped turbo bolt (funnily enough they snapped it trying to fix something else) i started to hear knocking noises during some turns coming from the engine bay. I took my car to my mechanic to have some underbraces and lca bushes installed and he found the reason i was hearing those noises was because the engine wasnt completely secured as 2 or 3 bolts were missing..

The engine is held in by 2 nuts. If they removed them to fix a turbo bolt find a new mechanic.

It was subaru that didn't mount my engine properly, and my own mechanic that identified the issue!

What were they doing that required it to be removed? Apart from removing it or doing heads it shouldn't be loosened.

I have the same problem, sounds (from reading here and asking around) like its the suspension BUT in saying that a guy has had a similar problem with a different resolution- link below.

...Its probably cheaper to buy a whole used/new set of Bilsteins than to get the one reconditioned.

They left the clamp off the boot of the cv and it leaked everywhere. Got them to replace the cv and clamp and it still ticks just not as bad. I'm thinking suspension.

Checked my Strut Top bolts and LCA bolts (bushes seem to be in reasonable condition). Also had them the tyre-fitter's check the Tie Rod End's and links for me (not that i could guarantee they would have actually done it). But still, nothing. Also thinking suspension, or CV's. But i still get hte sound when the wheels are entirely straight, making me think not-so-much CV's.

If it's not loose bolts etc. somewhere, it can also be the Bilsteins needing to be repacked with grease.
That is, between the damper body and the strut body that houses it.
There's how-to's at LegacyGT.com including adding a grease nipple to the strut body.

Yep. Exact same symptoms as me. Got worse tonight after a drive thru king lake with dampers set on hard.nthe sound seems to be a rattle or knock, and feels a little like steering rack is loose, doesn't happen in a straight line but turning into a street over tram tracks or hitting reflectors on the street sets it off. (I have brand new coilovers so I'm positive it's not the billies that are knocking). Gonna check out my x-member bolts tmr and give u guys an update.
