new my08 gt owner

Postby Stomps » Thu Apr 12, 2012 12:11 am

Hey all,

Been following the forum for a while but havent posted..

I just recently bought a my08 gt auto (weak gearbox choice I know)

But to be honest I know it was a smart move in the long run..after test driving a few gtb and 3.0r bspec manuals I knew that if I got one I would drive it every day like I did on the test drives, which would lead me to breaking them etc...

I already have a mental track car so just wanted a nice daily cruiser...
My track car is a 500rwhp+ jzz20 Toyota soarer, full roll cage, built motor, gt35r, every supporting power mod etc...plus a bucket load of suspension gear, fully built gearbox, gutted interior and much more.... hence I wanted something comfy to get to and from work... and I always loved gen4 liberties..

So more to the point, I now have a stock Gen 4 liberty and need some parts... I'm not going stupid but there are a few things I want..

1. Exhaust system, happy with either cat back or full, prefer quad sti style tips but not fussed..

Fucking POS touchpad I was on wouldn't let me edit...

2. Suspension, nothing stupid, I've got 20kg springs in my race car, I don't want a teeth shattering ride, just lower than stock so when I get new wheels it doesn't look stupid... either stock gtb gear with lower springs or sti gear will do...unless I find some decent coilies cheap... swaybars etc can come later..

3. Wheels, will see later

4. Some body work... a sti lip for sure, then maybe rolled guards to suit the new wheels...

Either way, hey all... I look forward to learning some more about liberties and getting some ideas from you guys...

Welcome to the forums! I like you already haha.

1.What’s your budget for your exhaust?

2.Is yours a GT-B? Not sure if your model comes with bilsteins standard but if they do try hitting up PHAT GT (there is a section for him in the For Sale – Commercial Vendors section) for some Tein S Tech Springs. They should give you about a 20-25mm drop from stock height. I’m really happy with how my car sites, just above the wheel. If yours didn’t come with bilsteins I suggest considering taking up the wheel power offer for bilsteins and standard springs for like $550 I think? And then just upgrade the springs separately!

3.Wheels….how high is your budget haha

4.Speak to PHAT GT for a sti lip if you want genuine, he can land them for a good price!

Hey, cheers...

the budget for the exhaust will depend on what it is... main criteria would be something that doesnt drone and isnt spastically loud but still gives a nice boxer sound when driven in anger..

to be honest i would be happy with a cat back system because im not after power gains at this stage..

my soarer is 3.5" from the turbo back, splits into 2x2.5" pipes around the diff, then into 2x4" pipes straight out the back... no mufflers, no cats etc.. just pipe.. so it's just a touch loud.. i dont want that in a street car.. Video below..

mine's not a GTB.. i was looking at them, but the GT came up for a price i couldnt resist... i was looking at some billies on here and was about to buy some, then a mate contacted me about some HKS hipermax ls+ coilies... i was going to buy them, went there, and they were sold... FFS... so looking again, will look into the S Tech idea.. cheers

As for wheels, im not into the whole "must be brand name wheels" thing.. and to be honest at the moment im considering either Rota Grids or Rota G-Force 18x8.5's... i know Rota cop a whole heap of "fake wheels" bullshit, but i'd rather get a decent looking set of rims for $1000 than spend $3k on brand name wheels... that other $2k can be better spent on power or suspension mods..

Ill see about the lip, i would prefer a genuine one.... Ill try to drag up pics of some of my past cars... most of them well ghetto modified...

below is a vid of my soarer.. at that point only making just over 420rwhp... was also limited to 2nd gear launches because i munched the gearbox the weekend before.. also the track was a little tight with huge kerbs on either side (Midvale for the WA people).. so couldnt really get carried away through the mid section..

I dont have any pics of my liberty yet.. been flat out with work...

Ill update as i can... cheers again for the advice etc...

So i finally got around to taking some photos..

got bored the other day and decided to go for a drive through the hills.. found a nice spot to take some pics.. had a quick play with Lightroom.. nothing fancy, just a bit of screwing around..

re: drive through the hills, gotta say im well impressed with the liberty's handling.. i knew they handle quite well, but was pleasantly surprised with how well it cornered and pulled out of corners.. a manual would have been better, but once i got used to the flappy paddle auto, i loved it...

i've recently bought some HKS Hipermax LS+ coilovers, but it turned out that one was leaking.. so im on the lookout again.. i was buying some bilsteins for a friend, so might just use them instead..

either way, here are some pics...

I fear I may be in the minority here, but, I really do love the look of the face lifted GT's. They are far too uncommon. Don't get me wrong, the wheels are utterly horrid and the designer and his seed should be wiped from this earth, but apart from that, damn sexy car bro.
Car(s): Steel Silver MY10 GT Wagon + 1985 Subaru Sherpa

Mods: (GT) HKS Panel Filter. The HKS I put in the MY10 is the same filter I took out of my MY05 GT. So yes, they do fit. Custom leather heel pad to minimise carpet wear in the drivers footwell. Slotted front rotors. (Sherpa) 14'' 6 Spoke mags, Chrome Gear Shift (sick!), Alloy Pedals (sicker!), new positive and negative battery terminals, Alpine cda-9827 H/U, JBL GT 6x9's boxed and mounted (sickest!), Kicker DS650.2 component speakers mounted in the footwells in flibreglass pods, Alpine MRP-F200 4 channel amp (4x40wRMS), Rebadged with hektik chrome eBay badges, STi stickers for more powaaaa, "leather" handbrake boot, recarpetted with grey/black car carpet from Bunnings, sick Clarke Rubber boot mat, polished and waxed.

I prefer them to the gtb for looks, which is why I'm on the hunt for the non-gtb front bar.

Hey, to be honest I'm not fussed... I haven't been around these things for long enough to have a preference.. I've seen many with the CF @ mesh front grill, I like the look but not on a stock car.. Not with standard ride height etc.. Plus I couldn't justify spending money on a grill....ever :)

Totally agree about the wheels, they are butt ugly, new rims are in the pipeline, but not before the tires on these are gone... There are brand new pirellis on there and I can't justify getting rid of them just yet...

Plus, initially I have to make some repairs to the sparer, I need a new twinplate, 35r needs a freshen up and I'd like to replace the current ltx12s with a haltech..

Having said that, I NEED an exhaust for this thing and I'm doing hone rennos ATM, too much shit to spend money on... I need a bank to rob.

See my exhaust fits your bill, but would be a bit more expensive than most would pay. There are some nice Tomei exhausts that Phat was telling me about for like $1,000-$1,500 and I think they were cat back, made of full titanium too!

yeah, $1000 for a cat back is more than im willing to pay...

realistically im not after a performance gain, just a nicer sound.. considering there are cat back systems for half that cost, i would be more inclined to go for them and spend the other $500-$1000 on getting my track car back up and running..

either that or ill get a mate to weld me something up... (only thing with that is it may be too loud)

like i said... im not a sucker for brand name shit.. if i can get someone to make something locally which does the job just as good, ill use them.. kinda not into the whole JDM yO! thing..

Haha if only mine costed $1,000....

If you can find a cat back system for $500 why haven't you bought it already?

Was looking at the Ultrex one for $599...

Dunno about the quality of them though, i havent read too many reviews...

to give you an idea, this is the total cost of exhausts on my past cars:

Toyota T18- 4age- $70... straight thru 2.5", no cat, 1 muffler.. found in my bro's backyard

Ma70 supra- $140.. plus $30 for a bottle for the welder.... 3" from turbo back, no cat, 1 muffler.. muffler cost $20 from an exhaust shop, cost of 3" mild steel.. SFA

GZ10 Soarer- $160.. 3" straight thru from turbo back.. no cat, 1 muffler... same story as above

Audi 80- $250.. aftermarket headers, straight thru 2.5", 1 cat, 1 muffler...

Lexus ls400 (celsior)... $300.. straight thru 2.5" x2.. from stock headers, no cats, cheap mufflers...

Current z20 soarer- $400.. custom dump, straight thru 3", to 2.5" around diff, straight thru to 2x4" pipes out the back... (rear section bought off forum)

I've never had 1 single "brand name" exhaust part on my car... every single exhaust i've had has sounded awesome... some a bit loud though...

The only reason im looking for a bolt in kit for this car is coz there are plenty available and i dont want something too loud..

i do most of the work on all my cars myself.. i know how easy it is to fit, make exhausts.. im not going to pay some muppet over $1000 for something i know is worth a quarter of the price..

each to their own though.. but for me its function over form... performance over style... i dont like blingy shit for the sake of it.. especially when it's under the car and you never see it..
