Potential GT owner

Postby Manaz » Mon Apr 09, 2012 9:39 pm

Hi all,

Currently own a 2004 VW Bora V6 4Motion (2.8L V6 AWD, 150kW/270Nm/~1475kgs). It's getting a bit old, is a bit small, and can be a bit expensive to look after, so considering a ~MY08 GT as a replacement.

Keen to hear people's thoughts of the later 2.5L GTs against the earlier 2.0L ones, and to know what the real differences are between GT/GT Spec.B/Tuned by STi cars.

Cheers!

Welcome, & Bump...

Edit: Now that I'm not on my phone, I'll type a bit more.

What I've heard is the 2.0T were more robust and can take a bit more boost than the 2.5T, whereas the 2.5T has smoother power delivery compared to the 2.0T.

As for the GT/SpecB/tbSTi difference, it is basically GT/GT with Bilstein suspension/GT with STi parts and a miserable 10kW power tweak.

As an obviously bias person (I'm selling my 08 GT TB STI).

You buy the TB STI for the uniqueness and toys (wheels, lip, brembos) not the extra power. Sure you can put all those extra toys on, but you'll spend similar(ish) money and not have the uniqueness.

Exactly right. Plus, if you look at the brand new price of an STI compared to a GTB it might not seem worth it, but go and compare the price of a used GTB and a used STI and see what the price difference is. I think you'll find that it's around $4,000-$5,000 at most.

New STI lip - ~$800
Brembos - ~$3,000? (if you're lucky) used
STI wheels - $2,500 without tyres (for brand new ones), say $1,500 used
STI quads - $650 used

There's more than the price difference just in those three parts. Then add the rear spoiler, various small suspension parts, the sti stitching, the badges, pink springs etc.

Of course if you are planning on changing any of the above it's more worthwhile getting a GTB and modding that as you wish :)
