Injector Clean - Servicing

Morning Gents (and ladies).

The Lib as currenty at Subaru getting a service. They did the usual dealer thing of trying to "upsell" eg tyre alingment, wiper blades, and finally injector cleaning.

At $140 or so I was not game to go ahead without understanding what the process is, and secondly if it's something I can do myself/get done elsewhere cheaper.

Does anyone have any info for a newbie?

not totally sure on how they clean the injectors but when I bought my lib it had a fresh bottle of fuel additive in it, my mechanic said put it in before you fill up with petrol as it will clean your injectors, did this straight after my first service, what a difference it made!! I must get around to getting some more

I paid $285 for an injector clean (including removal and full clean) so if that's what they're doing, the price is cheap. If they're just chucking in fuel additive then it's freakin' expensive. You should ask them what they would do for that price.

The general consensus is to avoid dealerships anyway.

Injector clean is a rip off don't do it.

As for the fuel additive it's an octane booster you put it in when you put a full tank of petrol in your car and it will make it run a little better for a while, but not really worth how much they charge for it!

Fuel additive is recommended every 6000km. Just get a general octane booster from Repco or wherever, it's cheaper. And run premium fuel.

A proper injector clean they remove the injectors, flow test them, if they're not in specs they clean them in a special acid with ultrasonic waves (uses an injector cleaner machine) and then flow test them again. If its all good they go back in the car with new orings an reset the ecu so it can relearn the flow of fuel. If it is due, or almost due I would do a fuel filter too to prevent clogging up the freshly cleaned injectors.

They charged me for a bottle of fuel addative. The "every 6000km" bottles.

I've added it.

I assume this is different to the $140 injector clean. I believe its a power flush??

Coasted me about 3 weeks with out my lib and 1400 because of dirty injectors ..

I agree with the only way to clean injectors is to remove them. (btw Dropz, it's not an acid but a water based detergent that goes in the ultrasonic bath and they are flowed with calibration fluid.

Watch out with octane boosters, the additives can leave a residue on the spark plugs.

If you use a good quality fuel and replace the filter often (more than recommended), I find there is no need for any fuel additives.

Or run ethanol fuel, no carbon build up on the plugs, cleans injectors and more power. 3 lots of win there

Don't forget to retune the ecu an replace all your fuel lines beforehand though, long term usage eats the stock fuel hoses.

It's happened again dirty injectors

so they got cleaned in January and dirty again? Is that possible ?

all fuel in Australia is pretty dirty, what fuel do you put in??

Use 98. All day everyday. If youre having a broke week, use 98, you'll feel better knowing you gave your car a 5 star drink.

None of this shell crap, BP all the way.
