I agree, having the turbo almost directly underneath the intercooler (which is atop the whole hot engine) is not optimal for bringing in cool air.

That's the main reason I'm getting FMIC, to reduce heat soke ;)

I thought it was because you were owned by a Toyota Aurion. :D

Actually I don't mind the Aurion.

Just like a Gen V Liberty but sounds like more power and probably cheaper service costs. :D

On topic I'm still not convinced about the need for a FMIC unless your looking for big power.

A good aftermarket TMIC will be able to deal with most people's power requirement. And won't create any attention from the fuzz.

Whilst moving, heat soak is not an issue as an area of lower pressure is created beneath the motor and high above with the splitter. Air will naturally move down and out. TMIC will get the job done.

Whilst sitting in traffic you will experience more heat soak than a FMIC but who needs to be boosting in these circumstances. And once you get moving and you get some airflow a TMIC will perform just as well in a matter of seconds.

Rome, I reckon you get your car tuned and then make a decision. 8)

+1 Damnit Bruce, you're making too much sense tonight!

<GB>/Brandon (aka Scott ) even said that he still experiences heatsoak with his FMIC when in traffic and his car is a beast. So you are kidding yourself if you think going to a FMIC is going to stop you from being beaten by an Aurion. Tune is what you need most, not a FMIC. Most people I speak to say they are a waste of money until the 240kw mark. And seeing as you have an auto, I don't see you making that kind of power easily.

There's a guy on the Mazda MPS forum who's done an amazing amount of work with temp gauges etc to determine benefits of both types and the result was TMIC is just as good unless your doing big power builds.

Search for it if interested.

you'll also find that the 3 mps has an awesome ability of shooting pistons out at around 82000km's... Well, they used to anyway...

having said that, how the hell do you lose to an aurion? Did you try racing him in reverse, while waiting for the light to go green before you started the engine?

Or perhaps you borrowed a friends prius and were driving that at the time? Later realising that you really shouldn't know anyone who owns a prius...

Obviously not many of you have had experience with FMIC setups.

If you can afford to do it, do it.

For the money you spend on a fancy top mount inter-heater, you can have a FMIC install done. Phat is your go-to-guy. Its super tidy, its very covert and works a charm.

What happens when that pesky Aurion is waiting at the lights for you? Your TMIC is soaking up the heat while your waiting for the lights to change. You gun it, intake temps are too hot, detonation occurs, timing is retarded, performance is nullified and you get chopped by a dishwasher.

FMIC + Tune and that Aurion is getting returned to The Good Guys where it belongs.

Firstly keiran, it was phat who told me to do FMIC, and I never once said that was the only thing I was doing. If you have a look at my profile page, upgrading to FMIC and upgrading the turbo, as well as going full turbo back and getting a tune have always been my goal, I can actually do it this year sooner than later as I have more money and time to leave my car with phat.

Secondly the comments about doing this just cos an aurion beat me have meant to be taken as tongue in cheek, as in it's the thing to finally get off my ass and do the mods I've been planning.

Also brainy have you ever gone against an aurion or driven one yourself? They are 200 kw so aren't slow, and i thought it was a Camry at first so didn't take off quickly like he did, I only put my foot down once I realised he was giving it a go and was only upset cos I couldn't close the gap as quick as I thought I could

Don't worry Rome we are only joking around!
I haven't looked at your member profile so I was just commenting on bruces comment, that a tune is what you need and not a FMIC.

I too know how fast an Aurion is in auto form from the lights. I tried to be 'smart' and go in the left lane on the Hwy at a set of lights, and a car was parked about 100M up ahead in the left lane past the traffic lights. Aurion was in the middle lane next to me. I didn't think much of it and just assumed I could have a pretty easy start and then give it a bit to get ahead. Next thing I know I'm having to slam on the brakes hard (ABS kicking in) because the Aurion is almost level with me, to prevent myself from smashing in to the parked car, because the Aurion driver dickhead thought it would be funny to block me out and try race me. Fucking bastard. I had to come to a dead stop. Then when I tried to pull back out some VP Commodore in the right hand lane decided it would be a great time to try change lanes without indicating in to the middle lane that I was changing in to, so then I had another near miss as I pulled out from behind the parked car.

TL;DR One Aurion almost caused me to have a bingle...twice.
