Intercooler: FMIC & TMIC

Postby [ITS-STI] » Fri Jan 20, 2012 7:37 pm

I'm not too sure if anyone has posted up a thread regarding this topic... I am ready to buy a intercooler kit for my car weather it be fmic or tmic i am not too fussed... I would like to see or know any one with fmic kits already fitted and who has the neatest straight out of the box fmic kit installed... Feel free to post pictures for comparison... I am just too confused... The only tmic i like is the hyperflow one unless someone has an alternate? I really wanted the HKS tmic but it is not made to suit a 2.5T... Cheers, Nick

Cool, this is exactly what I am looking into presently.
How much extra lag do you get with a FMIC and is it counteracted because you are less effected by heat soak that really pisses me about the TMIC?
Love the way the car runs when it has not sat a lights cooking itself......do you avoid most of this with FMIC?

Well, for the price maybe? I would rather cut as little off the bar as possible and have the shortest possible pipework and a flipped core... Not being too picky i hope! :?

The more answers the better... I am trying to figure this out for myself... I would prefer a fmic for the extra couple of hundred... Also, depends on the tune and supporting mods...

What other mods have you done to the car? If its stock a FMIC will have lots of lag. friend did it to his wagon without even a tune and it was awfull. he got a greddy FMIC.

In my case it's all preparation work to quickly go to a 2.5 built motor, turbo & 6 speed I am going to have started to be put together through autumn and winter.
I'll put up with some lag, the auto box in auto mode gives you heaps anyways while it selects a gear.

For nearly the same money as a decent TMIC, Phat could knock you up a full FMIC.

Lag in a FMIC is minimal, the turbo isnt an on/off switch according to the pedal, its ALWAYS pumping air through the pipes regardless. The only difference adding a FMIC to mine was increased mid/top end and no doughy heatsoak from sitting at traffic lights, = instant win. No difference in lag or anything, its so minimal its nearly a myth.

For the money you would be crazy not to do a FMIC, why do it half arsed? A TMIC is fine in the average car but to get the most of modding its the way to go, i could go on for hours but its tried and true.

I've not pulled the front bar off, is there anything stopping you putting a V mount in?

We've got a fair amount of grille space and with the front air damn as big as it is it could be perfect, however it might not be as well. I know there's honeycomb under there, but how much you'd be able to lay over the radiator I don't know. That way there's no chance of overheating probs.

This is how much room, note the crash bar and lower bumper support have been removed (to suit FMIC)

Apart from the obligatory cutting of the central support, which could be replaced elsewhere I don't see why it couldn't happen. I'll talk to Al when I feel like dropping some coin.
The other issue is creating negative pressure behind the core itself, ala Tino style, but I've seen a V mount work without vents with great success.

Jim did you go under the headlights? Did you need to remove much metal?

The pipes went down through the holes where on the RHS the resonator would be and on the LHS around the washer bottle. Then, following around underneath the headlight.

From what i could see with the bar off, theres just no other way to do the piping. Going directly under the headlight RS style just cant be done.

That is exactly what i needed to know about the fmic install... It just can not be done flipped core style like the old RS Turbo install... That was the best fmic set up ever... Damn... I hate heaps of pipework...
