Tire recommendations for a GEN3?

Postby WheelieBin » Wed Jan 11, 2012 6:12 pm

Hey guys,

So, despite the previous owner telling me the tires on my Liberty were only six months old when I bought it early last year, Eblens have told me today I need to replace the rears due to being bald on inner edges. These were rotated off the front at the previous service, and they didn't mention excessive wear (one had a very slow leak which they got repaired) at that time.

Two questions really - is it usual for them to wear this excessively in that short a period of time (173k km to almost 179k km - probably at least half of which I was still on my L's, so behaving myself and driving gently ;))

Other than that, what tires do people have experience with and recommend? This is on stock RX rims for the moment, I've got plenty of other stuff to spend money on before blinging it :( : replacing head unit, getting some minor body work stuff done - spoiler needs respraying, there's a dent in the rear right door (not made by me! :)), a few minor scratches on rear bumper (ok, so one of those was me ;)), and a few bits and pieces where the paint is showing it's Eleven years old and hasn't always been garaged (nor can I at the moment :()

Cheers,

Ben

Whats your budget and size? What do you want from the tyre, low noise, high performance, long life?

I believe the stocks are 16s? As for budget, not heaps, but when it comes down to it whatever I need to spend (let's treat this as not a hugely contributing factor, but at the same time I don't want to be ridiculous :)). Lifetime is probably more important than anything else, it's going to be doing a drive to Melbourne, around Tassie and back again in June, and probably at least once every 12 months after that, now I can take my own car with me when I go back rather than flying and then nagging other people to drive me places LOL (I'm originally from Tassie)

Its quite possible for new tyres to be worn in less than 6 months on the inside due to bad alignment particularly toe.

I had a bad alignment performed years ago and my new tyres were bald on the inside within 3 months. Not happy was an understatement! :angry2:

To me it seems you'll be doing a lot of freeway driving/cruising and would want a good all rounder rather than a performance tyre.

Good quality 16's are ridiculously cheap so stick with a good brand in and all rounder, get an alignment with the new tyres and it'll be apples.

Yokohama A drives, Bridgestone Turanza ER300, Pirelli P6000, etc, etc.
