Pull apart the lever and see if you can fit some washers above or below it to keep pressure on the spring at all times.

Easier said than done (dismantle)...The knob comes off, but I couldnt find a way to remove the next part off the lever. Maybe I didnt yank on something hard enough. There is something that looks a bit like a roll pin in there, but its not easy to see clearly, for me anyway.
Reading the WSM on lever assembly removal, its pretty ugly - drop the mufflers and exhaust pipe, the heat baffle, and the gearbox cross member to get at the gearbox connection...

you need to take the trim off around the gear lever. to remove the spring you don't need to take the whole lever out, it is all inside the car.

Yes, I had the trim off when I replaced the radio HU, but its attached to the reverse lockout thing - how do you dismantle further than that? The 5mt lever is easy because its reverse lock out is just a side spring, and once the knob is unscrewed the trim lfts off.
The WSM shows no detail of the lever's construction. Must look for a parts book somewhere..
- there is a roll pin sideways through the top..good luck removing that. The spring is underneath that part, but I would suspect the noise is lower down in the linkage, unless you can actually feel some vibration in the top of the lever. Check the link to the 2007 bl/bp manual in 2.5t specific list, chase down to lever disassembly.

What they call a 'spring pin' is what most call a 'roll pin', as its a piece of flat spring steel rolled into a small tube. This one looks like its < 3mm dia, and will take small drift to get out. Just take care to support the assembly when you apply the hammer.
Wish they had used a pair of grub screws or similar....

Just use a punch to tap it out. If you want screws you can always tap a thread into it.

Let us know how you go with the fix, if there's a way to tighten it up a little - mine rattles a little on some shifts - not the end of the world, but I'd be keen if it's an easy fix...

I looked up the info on the forum about short shifters.
Cobb install instructions:
http://www.cobbtuning.com/products/?id=2283
Great teardown in addition to the above from Dropz :-)
But as I just need to calm the rattle between gears a little - I might just try some dense/sticky grease on the reverse lockout slider.
Grease is specifically recommended in the Cobb instructions.
Especially as I'd like to save the big one for actually installing one of these sweet double adjustable short shifters!!!

Also quoted from teK-- » Wed Sep 21, 2011 12:47 pm
"The zip ties are to reduce rattle on the reverse lockout cable :p"
So perhaps it's worth lifting the boot to check those are tight and in place as it could also be a source of the in-gear/rev range rattling as described by the OP.

so, its only been annoying me for 3 years, but finally pulled the shifter apart to have a look and re-grease.

after pulling it apart (the lock out pin was the hardest part to get out, a lot easier to get back in, still difficult), definitely suggest using the correct tools (I did not). There was zero grease left on it and the silver plastic plate that sits on the top of the lift out had come loose. So I applied a tonne of lithium grease to the spring and shaft also tried to get some inside the shaft where the metal cord go through.

after a drive to and from Newcastle on the weekend i got zero rattle cruising in 6th and some slight noise WOT in 2nd

tips: have the car in reverse to stop the lock out cord from dropping (you can pull it back up if it does drop)

Mines still quiet a coupla years after the Cobb STS install - a little grease goes a long way :)
