Replacing idler pulley

Has anyone replaced their idler pulley?

I think the bearings in mine are shot and wanted to know if its a job left to the mechanic or something I could have a go myself?

If anyone has, is it as simple as loosening the Belt tension adjuster to remove the belt and then just undoing the idler pulley and replacing and refitting the belt?

Hi mate,
Mine was busted about 2 months ago,

Idler and tensioner bearings were seized and the belt wore out, I didn’t have time or knowledge to do it myself so I got my mechanic to change the bearings only in both of the units ( as the tension is pretty pricey) and also replaced the belt. Cost me about $190 including labor

Yes

REMOVE BELT

Undo pulley retaining bolt, remove pulley, fit new pulley ...... add a little touch of locking compound (loctite to thread) then fit and tighten bolt

Very easy

For those with more tools, you go to bearing shop and buy some 6203 RRS C3 ball bearings (1 for each idler pulley), press out old bearings and fit your new bearings with a little loctite around the edge before you press them in. You should be able to do the whole set for less than $12.00 with high quality NTN, SKF, KOYO or similar high quality brand bearings

which bearings do you can recommend - i mean the advanced one for the headcase

If you want ceramic I can supply you some SKF, I cannot recommend the VXB stuff. As you may or may not know I use a lot of ceramic bearings and thats my advice on that subject

General advice - NEVER use ZrO2. The balls are more for high heat than any amount of high speed, pieces fly from the balls when given a good rev. Si3N4 balls should be the only choice EVER when choosing a ceramic hybrid bearing

I did mine a little while ago, bearings were $10 each, got them pressed for free, and managed to get a new serpentine belt form subaru for under $100. Done in an arvo. Definately have a crack at it yourself.

What parts are required in replacing the idler pulley?

Mine may be gone as well as I can hear a rattling coming from the pulley. Can someone tell me the consequences of not fixing this ASAP...I am going on a trip in a few days

Pulley fails, belt snaps or the pulley falls to pieces, you then loose your alternator And Power steering. You can only make it so far with out that
