Brembo's for 04-06 GT

I'm looking at getting a set of Brembo's, just have a few questions.

1) What type of Brembo's would I be needing to look at?

2) As I know that the Brembo's won't fit on the OEM wheel's, what are wheel dimensions that I will need to be able to have for Brembo's to fit without any issues? (Don't won't to get any sizes over 18")

3) As I'll be on a budget would getting the calipers first then getting the rotors later have a major impact?

1) Brembo from any Subaru STi should bolt straight up to your existing mounts. You will need the rotors to match though.
2) Hard to say, will depend on the spoke design.
3) You'd need the rotors from the STi.

Rears are more complicated.

I would be going after some design's but around the fitment of the Brembo's, as I'll be getting a family friend to fit them I wouldn't have the benefit of choosing the wheels after they've been installed. As I was looking at the post facelift GT Spec-B Rims but after finding out they won't with the Brembo's have started to find something similar.

Do you have any Subaru friends with Brembo wheels? Take them wheel shopping with you so you can get test fits done

Front and rear Brembo's up to the current model STi will fit, fronts of the current model will fit, rears wont.

Just remember the STi PCD changed from '05 on to 114.3 so the rotors will be no good to you if you found a brake package from an '05+ STi.

The easiest solution for the rears is a set of Kartboy adapters to mount the caliper and a set of DBA upgrade rotors to suit the standard Liberty handbrake size. With this its a bolt on proposition.

The rear section of the rear brakelines also needs to be changed as the standard caliper has a 90 degree fitting to the caliper whereas the Brembo has a straight fitting.

Heres a set ive just finished for someone, stripped painted, new decals and all new seals, direct bolt on package to a Gen1 RS Liberty.

Theres a lot of wheel choices out there, just need to know what look your after.

Any brembo fronts from any subaru 2001 onwards will bolt to the front.

Rears wont on anything. Adaptors can be purchased from a variety of sources. Some require a quick die grind of the cast iron or alloy upper lateral link (about 1mm of meat at most for half a square cm, nothing at all). Always use new high tensile bolts, with spring washers. Kartboy, KNS, etc.

2008+ rear brembos are slightly different in rotor hat size and caliper offset. The mounts are different and its not worth your time to bother if you want a bolt on solution, stick to gold 2001-2007 rears.

Brembo calipers use a different bolt pitch to the FHI 2/4pot brakes. M14x1.25 for a front brembo from memory, M14x1.5 for the others. (or the other way around, had to helicoil one of my calipers on one of the libertys). Local bolt store

Lines are not an issue. Not having the brake line go through the casting guides is not against ADR's at all. If a line is in full tension at any point in the wheels bound or rebound arc, you've got the wrong lines on anyway so its a nil issue. I grind the guides off the rears anyway. Any set of brake lines from goodridge, hel, STI etc to suit a BP/BL/BE/BH liberty or legacy or outback will work fine. Ebay is your friend.

No you can not use non brembo rotors. Brembo rotors are 13 inches...
If you're doing it on a tight budget, then save more and do it right. Or just do the fronts. The rears do nearly nothing anyway.
Buy the cheapest set of brembo fronts you can possibly find. Throw a seal kit at them and a general tidy up, add some QFM HPX pads (support the aussies) and some DBA 2001-2004 sti rotors. Total job should take 2-3 hours. A full bleed of the fluid at all corners and you're golden.

Rear rotors need DBA conversion rotors, any DBA dealer can find these or your local autobarn can get em in. Or tuspeed etc etc. Very common item and widely used for these conversions world wide (to retain the 170mm handbrake assembly, as with our multilink rear end we cant use an STI's R180 rear hubs)

For a free plug, kris at rising sun subaru usually always has a few sets of brembos in good condition laying about. I didnt bother with a seal kit on mine

So the only possible rotors to use if you are going brembo rears on say an MY07 GT.B is still DBA? Are there no Dixcel/other brands available for that?

Depends on the color. For gloss black and red, you can go past the Killrust epoxy enamel for durability. No clear needed. For the silver I did on mine, it was Killrust undercoat and then VHT caliper paint. I cleared them as the silver isnt glossy.

I fitted new brake lines as I like to do things properly.

Check the dust seals. If theyre cracked as the ones in mine were, Id suggest replacing them for the good of the pistons longevity.

The kit only comes with piston seals and dust seals so I used them both.

A brembo seal kit is cheap insurance. But last 2 sets ive bought have had less than 20,000km on them and hadnt sat in the snow of a wrecking yard in jap for 5 years.

Why anyone would want to use dixel or project moomoo or some other shit on the rear brakes is beyond me? DBA are a fantastic product.

You can use dixelshitmu or whatever you like by using some larger handbrake shoes to change the 170 to a 190 in effective OD, but theyre expensive and crack. Waste of time.

On a gen 4 lib, its also worthwhile to use socket headed cap screws instead of hex bolts on the rears. (local bolt store ftw, cost me about a dollar) You still need to grind a touch off the upper lateral link with some kits, but theyre far easier to get done up and undone than trying to swing a socket around.
