wow, here's some info:

Just was quoted $5,600 for factory subaru turbo...... ouch...

Then I was given an option of a rebuild to Ball bearing VF34 specs by MTQ = $2500 but still need front pipe.

Spoke to Bryce at Pulse and he recommends the CBRD BBK Turbos. getting a price now............ you spoke to Bryce Pulse's youngest apprentice .. wish Bryce all the luck with that one

Direct bolt on no mods needed. and seeings he will be doing the tune, id rather get that fitted than something he doesnt recommend.
Which is what he said. Dont go near the VF34 rebuild..............if you go this way get Pulse to sign a stat dec in regards to the direct bolt on claim so you dont get hit up with extra charges

As im not completely up to speed with Liberty turbo info, i feel in the middle and at the mercies of the two workshops....
anybody got any info, recommendations, light to shed on this subject?
Surely others have had the turbo blow?

i have done the conversion from stock turbo to aftermarket turbo many times and its not a big job with reliable out comes and the ablity to make will over 200kw with surpporting mods down the track ......... but dont worry Pulse should know all that

The best advice I can offer is “STAY AWAY FROM PULSE”, the end result will be a poorly tuned car that will require a re-build later down the track.

The advice/knowledge of Phat GT is priceless!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it didn't throw a wheel, lucky. It has more than a few mm of play, hence the noise.

Mate of mine went to Pulse a while ago and got a tune, he only just discovered they chopped the stock flash plug off and put their own one on, without advising or invoicing at all. Arsehats.

progress,

It appears the housing may have cracked and let water into bearing, causing the failure.
No water in oil in engine or vice versa so it must be. They are pressure testing the casings and will report soon, if it is cracked, they will be throwing a brand new one on.

progressing.....

So the housings weren't cracked. Few. So they are proceeding to rebuild the turbo to VF3x spec and it will be a ball bearing. Will have more flow.
Should be going by friday next week. And I am booked in to MSR for a tune on 24th. Cant wait to have this back.

Well,

not that anyone cares. The turbo was finished, and put back on my liberty on wednesday afternoon.
They went for a test drive and under no load at all, the oil light flicked on and "knock a knock a knock"
Bearing shat itself. Drivers front cylinder crank bearing disintegrated and spat a hand full of metal into the oil filter.
So to add to my nightmare its now an engine rebuild or a new short block. Frig!
Worskshop is too busy this week so the repairs goes into its 4th week and engine is pulled out on monday. Who knows how long it will take....

Needless to say I'm over it. And ready to give up. :(

Blown Turbo Suspected

Sorry to hear, a bad result no doubt, look on the bright side you can probably look into dropping a set of forged pistons into it whilst it's all out , speak to MSR as he might have a block pre built or speak to Kris at rising sun Subaru as he is now selling pre built short and long blocks that are extremely competitive in price. You will probably get a faster turn around time that way

Far out... that sucks big time... hope you find a palatable solution to it all (and that the CC isn't suffering too much!)
