Short Shifters

Postby fr250t » Fri Sep 16, 2011 10:45 am

For all you 6 Speeder's out there, seeing what Short Shifters your using.

I want to install one, more concerned about shortening the throw as opposed to the height, but maybe a one inch drop would be nice.

Done some hunting around, but some alternative places/sites to buy from would be appreciated if possible :)

Cheers,
Fab

I have had the STI short shifter for a few days and I think it's great.
It's only short throw, not height, and it is only a little shorter but I don't think I would want it much shorter anyway.
I did stiffer engine and gearbox mounts also and shifting is so much better now.

I got mine from Phat, see viewforum.php?f=38

A number of people on here have and are happy with it.
See viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5528

There are people on here that have different ones though that should be able to give you more to compare.

Yer im not a fan of the real "stubby" ones, my brother has one and find it uncomfortable for everyday driving, each to their own tho.
I know Gambit has an adjustable short shifter he got from the US, be interesting to hear his thoughts on that..sounds pricy tho...

Short Shifters

Yep I have the mode racing short and I think it's great, mine is set the absolute shortest shift possible and the highest height at it's extreme, which is what I prefer. Not that exy with the exchange rate atm.

if you want the shortest throw without loosing height

then i would take the lead from the WRX STi guys.

STi 6 speed shift kit, replaced bushes, kartboy or perrin short shifter.

rated as the best combination without too much of a lost of height.

Gotta say the stock shift in my S4 is pretty nice... crisp and great feedback, throw isn't long at all!

+1 I found it was a much better drive by reducing throw but having stock/higher height. Having it very low felt weird.

Also the Kartboy linkage bush improved feel immensely; the gates feel very defined and it clicks into each gear.

I'm using the AVO short shift with throw set at about 2/3 of max reduction, and STI gearknob which raises the height by about half an inch.

Thanks for the tips boys, done some hunting !
Im super keen on the Mode Racing (Cobb) Shifter, purley because it looks like a sturdy unit and read some realy good long term reviews. Howeverrrr it's discontinued on alot of sites and the one i did find was a bit pricey... Gambit, not sure what they're ment to be going for ??
http://www.prospeedracing.com.au/products/MODE-Racing-Short-Shifter-Liberty-6-Speed-02%252d07-.html?setCurrencyId=1

The Kartboy one seems popular however im not a fan of the cable ties and the way it looks like its been choped and welded back together in that off-set format, i dont realy want to replace a strong genuine subby part with a less structurally sound part.. feel free to tell me im wrong haha !

Also found the AVO one tek mentioned.. not sure if the one i found would suit my car? Seems like a good piece.

Rick from Rallysport just emailed me and said they just put them up today ;)
I'm assuming the COBB is similar to the ModeRacing from what i have read ??? Opinions?

I'm keen on the bushes too so will see what price he can do the package for me.

Opinions if this is a reasonable price / worth while mod thanks guys ;)

The zip ties are to reduce rattle on the reverse lockout cable :p

I do not know why people rate Subaru 6 speed. It is so over rated that is it isn't funny.

Maybe because it isn't as crappy as the 5 speed?
