Spark Plugs

Postby Jim » Tue Aug 30, 2011 11:11 am

Hey kids,

Why am i having such a kent of a time trying to find plugs for the GT? Handbook states SILFR6A's and ive been everywhere and most of the places havent heard of them or dont stock them.

Does this mean a trip to the closest Subaru Service joint who barely know their heads from their asses?

They are hard to find because they are made specifically for Subaru (they are a 5 ohm plug and the first letter of the product code actually stands for "S"ubaru).

If it's a really big power engine, then these:

But I think we can count on one hand the number of cars that need colder plugs.

Thanks mate, i had a feeling the S was for Subaru.

Would there be a difference between SILFR6A's and ILFR6A's or is the difference the thread length?

The thread is identical and I'm pretty sure the gap is too.

They will work and you likely won't notice any difference, but may as well get the Subaru ones so the impedence is as per spec.

Cool bananas, trying to get ontop of a slightly shaky idle. Feels like theres a slight intermitant miss at idle, can feel it through the body of the car.

Have done all the usual things, AFM cleaner, Upper engine cleaner, check air leaks ect. I think its the fuel system or spark, probably could get an injector clean service done but i would rather start with the things i can do myself. They probably just jam a bottle of cleaner in your tank and tell you theyre "serviced" anyway.

Thing that beats me about the Gen4 is the fuel filter is part of the pump assembly and according to the workshop manual it isnt servicable without replacing the pump? Whats the go with that?

Not the same plug I know but the plugs for the H6 are SILFR6B. It's an NGK plug. The set I got from Subaru were just the regular NGK ILFR6B plugs in Subaru packaging. Wouldn't be surprised if similar happens for you.

No idea on the A and B, but I spoke with an NGK guy the other day who said the S officially stood for square tip.

I was recently in the same boat and had no choice but to buy them directly from Subaru, they were the B’s, have been fitted and my mis fire is goooooooooone.

I was thinking the A’s might refer to the OE supply, where the B’s are for service/aftermarket sales.

Jim, make sure you closely examine your coil pack clips, they become very brittle especially bank 3 being closest to the exhaust, it doesn’t take much for a lose connection to result in a mis-fire.
Not a soobi anymore, but still slightly dirty

Excellent thanks Tony, at least i can use them now knowing that you have with no dramas.

Strange as the service manual said A's only for 2.5T and B's for 3.0 and everything else?
