Thermo Fan - Subaru Sherpa

Postby garbo41610 » Wed Aug 03, 2011 9:54 am

Hi all,

I am looking at hopefully installing a more efficient thermo fan into my Sherpa to help keep the motor a bit cooler while sitting in traffic etc. The problem being, I haven't really had any experience with engine cooling. The OEM fan is around 220mm which works out at about 8.5 inches which I can't seem to find. All I can find are 7 and 9inch fans.

Anybody got any info or suggestions on suitable fans and what else I would need for the install??? Here is the eBay link that I have used, http://cars.shop.ebay.com.au/Cars-Bikes ... 513&_pgn=1

Cheers,
Phil.

For a car that size I would say a 10 or 12inch fan is more than enough, and the radiator probably won't take above 12inches. They are very easy to install, just plug it into the stock wiring, or if needed get fancy with the wiring as you would have done with your stereo so it plugs in. :)

Installing the fan itself is easy, take the radiator out and poke the bolts through the radiator fins (don't puncture the tunnels) then do them up with a good size washer to hold it firm. Normally it'll come with general instructions on how to mount the fan anyway so you can't get it wrong.

Awesome! Thanks for the info mate.

So just to confirm, I don't need a Sherpa specific thermo fan? Any old thermo fan from SCA/Repco etc will work???

Thanks again bud.

Any fan will fit. :) I used a Repco one in my old skyline no worries. :)

Ok, i'll go back to the beginning a little

Is the current fan not cooling the radiator efficiently?
do you have a proper temp gauge installed to monitor water temps, not just the built in gauge on the dash?
Has any of the rest of the cooling system been inspected for faults?

just making sure you're not trying to band-aid an underlying cooling system issue

Hi bud, sorry for the delay in replying. There aren't any issues with the cooling system as it stands. I don't have any guages installed, however, it is a route I wouldn't mind going down at some stage. I am just relying on the in-dash guage to indicate temp changes. It never rises above just over halfway when sitting in traffic, and sits bang on halfway when cruising, no matter what speed.

I'm looking at upgrading the fans for two reasons;
1) Something to do LOL. I like tinkering.
2) As a "just in case" measure. With the engine as old as it is (however, it only has about 130,000kms) I'd just like a bit of reassurance that the cooling system won't fail. Well, as reassured as I can be I spose.

As they say, bigger is always better right??? LOL. I took a bit of a closer look at the radiator on Saturday, it looks as though a 10" fan is about the biggest I can go.
