Gearbox oil coolers for auto...

Postby tangcla » Fri Nov 09, 2007 3:45 pm

I've heard that the oil cooler is quite useful for an auto. Is this the case?

I have the oil cooler for my auto.

I don't know if it's good or bad, but I think it would have to be beneficial. I have had it on my GT since I got it.

Good for spooling up with the brake on at the lights ahhahahah

Came as part of the "tow kit" from Subaripoff.

I think the tow bar and cooler were about 2k from memory, but you would have to be able to get something similar for $200 or so surely.

$2k?!?! tow bar and oil cooler kit is about $900. Oil Cooler Kit alone from Subaru is about $220 fitted.

+1, I've got one, but haven't had the car without it for comparison.

Has anyone else had this mod performed and for what prices?

Still trying to decide between racks and a pod for long trips or towbar and trailer

I've been told if one does hard driving in an auto, it is a worthwhile investment.

I should be able to get the part itself (exactly the same as OEM but without the Subaru writing) for under $400, if there's enough interest, group buy? :)

I got the tow bar and the auto oil cooler since I got the car... the only bad point was when I hit the roo at the front, I couldn't drive no more cause transmission fluid started to leak everywhere.

The cooler pipes and cooler itself run along the front of the car, infront of the radiator.

How hard is it to mount and run lines Etc?

Should be pretty straightforward, I got quoted <$100 for fitting. It's OEM so everything should pretty much be plug and play.

Hint: fitting this would also be a great time to do an transmission fluid change ;)

Essentially if you run an Auto and you are significantly increasing the loading on the auto box (towing, pod on the roof, fat bastard's in the back seat etc) you should always have an oil cooler..

The viscosity of the oil changes at different temperatures.. different viscosity = different lubricating levels.. Unfortunately, the more load you put on your box.. the better the lubrication you require (especially auto's )

so in essence.. even if you don’t have a tow ball and you don’t have roof racks, get the oil cooler.. its a worthy investment.. No extra horse power.. no performance benefits, just insurance to allow you to have smooth auto changes for years to come!
