Postby MattyBeloved » Thu Jul 14, 2011 3:47 pm

Heyya guys. I was wondering if anyone knows anyone in Newcastle/Hunter Region that re conditions suby engines...
I have a 1999 liberty RX with an EJ251 engine thats leaking coolant from between heads and the block........ </3

My mechanic advised me to change them but I was thinking a reco engine..

Any help???????

$3200 is very steep. Find a Subaru dealer and get them to quote you, at work (in SA though) we quote $2500 for both head gaskets including machining of the heads. The reason it's so steep is the DOHC's need the engine taken out to do it. On the later SOHC's you can get away with leaving the engine in the car, which takes a chunk off the price.

A reco engine will set you back about $1200 (rough market price) plus fitting, (roughly 10 hours labour) and even though it is slightly cheaper you have no idea of what condition the engine is in or how its been driven or service schedules on it or anything. It may only be 6 months away from blowing a head gasket then you go through the same ordeal again.
Built not bought, it's a way of life.

Cheers for the replies guys.
Pete @ Skazas said $3200 for a full head service. But he did say he'd have to take the engine out. Even tho its a SOHC ]=

Im thinking the subaru wreckers at cardiff.
I hear they have mostly low K engines. But their just pressure tested. I'd ask them about Warranty though..
But yea, im not overly confident on the engine in my liberty as is. Im thinking pull it down, clean it up and sell it for scrap clean alloy.. Try to get some sort of coin out of it

Yea this could be good!
Auction for a read-ended suby.

This means more spare parts.
Is there any local auctions or are we talking sydney way???

Thanks for your help [=
