Removing cup holders

Postby seanmau5 » Wed Jul 13, 2011 11:37 pm

Can the rear cup holders be removed from the centre console in the Gen IV? I've found a guy selling salvageable (is that even a word? ) parts and would love to purchase them as mine are busted. Short story - he reckons he can't remove them and wants to sell the whole console for $130.. Is that expensive?? I would assume that it's a decent price considering just the cup holder mechanism is $45 alone from Subaru America. But I really don't want the extra bits :(

If someone could let me know how it's done so I can pass the information onto him?

Yes I am (relatively) certain they can. I had a rattling centre console lid in my GenIV and took the whole assembly apart and tightened every screw I could find up and I am sure I took the cupholders out at one point.

I never tried but the Forrester I used to have seemed really similar to the GenIV, the mechanism that folds down when the flap is open (just before the spring loaded arms fling out) had two nubbly things that aligned with holes in the recess of the centre console.

The Forrester one came apart (but never actually broke) really easily so I never actually let anyone use the cupholder in my Lib...primarily because the Forrester was a company car and well, yer

After I hit send I realised that the rear cupholder removal and refit should be covered in that .pdf manual that Tanglca had for the GenIV body.

PM me if you don't have it (not sure if Clarence still has the file on his website) and I'll have a look for it

How does the cup holder come out?
I need to repair/replace mine, but fiddled for about 30mins yesterday and couldn't work out how the silly thing comes away from the console.

Thought I'd post some info in this thread in case someone's searching for info.

To remove the cupholders from the rear console in my 09 GenIV.

1. Remove console lid by undoing the three screws. Lift the console lid to release the hinge from the recess.

2. In the top back of the rear console there's a plate where the ashtray would be. Pry it off with a screwdriver/appropriate tool and remove the single screw.

3. Unclip the top of the rear of the console, and pull backwards. The bottom of the console rear "hooks" onto the console box at the bottom. Pushing it down will get it yo release from the hooks.

4. The cupholder is clipped into the rear panel of the console on all four sides. I found it easier to use a screwdriver to release the top clip first and then release the two side clips.

As a side note... The legacy cupholders are smaller and don't fit!
