Dynamat before and after.

Postby slackboy72 » Tue May 31, 2011 10:53 pm

This is a before and after of a MY08 Liberty GT with the McIntosh system.
Front doors were Dynamat'd.
Rear sub was enclosed in a box stuck under the parcel shelf.
Parcel shelf was Dynamat'd.

End result was immediately noticable improvement in bass response.
Take a listen, it's subtle. Make up your own mind.

Good comparison.

Just for future reference though, try using Stinger Roadkill. It is 1.8x more denser than Dynamat so 1 Stinger RoadKill sheet is about equal to 2 Dynamat sheets.

Also, what do you mean by you have made a box for the rear sub stuck under the parcel shelf? As in did you build a box for the stock sub and just attached it to the parcel shelf somehow?

How did you seal the box? Especially with the rods passing through etc.

Thats why I ask, as it kind of defeats the purpose of boxing it? If the box leaks air it acts as a ported box, however if the port is too big then the sub wont have best performance. Although I guess its still better than having no box at all.

Yeah it's effectively a ported box but it makes a noticable difference.
I went that way cause I didn't want an enclosure sitting on the floor of the boot with my cricket gear or my pushbike.

The install looks good. However, the box isn't "effectively" a ported enclosure, a port on a sub box is a specific length and width for a specific sub, thickness of mdf used etc. Tbh I am replying on my phone and haven't heard the results as yet, but I will add that, without knowing the T\S specs of the driver, an enclosure cannot be accurately made for it and can possibly be detrimental to the drivers performance. .

Just took a listen to the vid. It has made a pretty decent difference, well done.

I just re-read my previous post and it could be read a bit differently to what I intended, it was meant as an FYI not a smart assed comment as it could be read, sorry about that.

I can't hear the difference my PC speakers are crap :)

As for the enclosure under the rear subby I would have thought it makes no difference or is of detriment since an infinite baffle sub needs as big an enclosure as it can get, so when u squash it into a small box 3L or so by the looks of things you are actually running it outside of its design specs.

Well it sounds louder. The youtube vids don't do it justice as it was just taken on a point and shoot compact camera. I can keep the bass on the McIntosh set to 0 instead of +2 or +3. I'm happy with the result and it negates the need for me to put in a proper aftermarket sub and amp.
Not sure if it's just because of the enclosure or the Dynamat or both.

I'm just posting my results to give other people an idea of what to expect if they do the same.
Not a huge differnce but a noticable one.

The box may have changed the response curve of your subwoofer. If it's louder at the mid range it is possibly quieter at the low range.
