Putting headunit into Top navigation/Cubby hole?

Postby BP5GT » Mon May 23, 2011 1:41 pm

Hi

Is this space a standard double din size? 05 LGT

Can we just buy a double din head unit and put in there.
I realise there will still be the factory stereo below but that could be simply disconnected.

Short answer, yes. Have a look in the audio options subforum - I have covered this in depth before, as have some other memberes.

I don't think that the cubby is exactly 2DIN. Some fabrication is required IIRC. You'll also need relocate the fuel info display at the bottom of the cubby, there is a kit for this I've seen from JapanParts.com.

In the end, it probably works out costing around the same as installing a 2DIN fascia kit and head unit but 2 or 3 times as difficult.

I'm about to attempt this: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=12086

Final parts arrived today from Phat so will book it in soon. The issue is how you want to run the sound. I bought an aux in adaptor as per that thread to run the head unit through the aux of the mc. You'll need the centre console panel and the information relocation bracket which Phat can get you.

Will let you know how it goes and update that thread once it happens. The depth of the double din hu might be an issue. I'm hoping not. Plenty of examples of such an install in the US and Japan.

Who thinks the top navigation slot is a better place for a double din hheadunit than replacing the factory stereo???

Seems a better position as its up higher.
My headunit will be TV,Navigation,stereo

It's easier to see, yes, however remember at night, when your eyes are tired and you just don't want to have any distraction other than the road. Having something so bright up there is quite distracting.
