My Ghetto-ish Subaru Sherpa Stereo Build

Postby garbo41610 » Sat Apr 09, 2011 7:35 pm

Thought i'd post up some photos of the great time I am having slapping in an all second hand stereo (it does however consist of relatively quality components). When I bought it of AekOne it had an eBay headunit running the single speaker in the dash (of unknown size but not much more than 2-3".

First, my little baby:
Image

I wasn't sure what I wanted but I knew the only way to proceed so I jumped onto MEA and bought a set of hectic JBL GT 6x9s for $50 delivered from Melbourne, they are the older series that's built quite well and can take hammering (we will see hehe). I am fundamentally against all 6x9's because I hate the way they sound, but remember I am doing this for a bit of fun and I will no doubt get rid of these in favour of something else at some stage.I was then off to autobarn to get a set of sik by nyn boxes for $25 or there abouts on sale. I then had to move the cargo area bar thingy back towards the boot lid a bit to fit the boxes in behind the seats. The cabling you can see between them is some 4guage I bought from Jaycar today for the eventual amp install.

Image

By then I was growing tired of the no name head unit and thought I needed some alpine love, this time the purchase was made off eBay for an Alpine CDA-9827. These are a great little unit and have the added benefit of having 3 pairs of preouts. The seller said it was in great condition and it was when I got it out of the box and installed it, unfortunately, on the second or third day of ownership the CD mechanism pooped itself and now doesn't take CD's so i was stuck with only radio for a while.

Image

Next up on the list was a front stage. Supercheap Auto this time for an awesome set of 6.5" Pioneer coaxials and then on to MEA again to by a set of fibreglass pods someone made up. The pods are fantastic really well made and fit almost exactly. They sit above the bottom of the door frame a little but there is enough room(JUST) so you don't kick them whenever you hop in the car. The speakers however, sounded shite. But, they would do for a while. Until I got sick of them and recently bought a set of kicker splits for $70 delivered off an MEA member. I didn't realise and the guy I bought them off didn't mention that they are brand new in the box and had never been installed or taken out of the platic tight bags that the drivers, splits and crossovers came in LOL. Again, these speakers are a few years old so they are still built quite well (for a chinese made speaker) but I had heard them in a mates car before and they had about 150wRMS fed to them and went really well. I have only had to time to install one at this stage so the right front speaker is a Kicker split and the left front is a pioneer coax. This will be remedied in the not too distant future. The other downside is now the pods need some modification, the Kicker speakers are actually a 6.75" speaker and the pods were only made for 6.5s. For now, I have the cross over just laying on the floor under my seat but will make something up for them to mount to when I get to installing the amps.

Image

By now I was getting jack of only having the radio to listen to so I searched and search for an iPod adapter for the Alpine head unit and found a cheapie from the UK on eBay, $17 delivered. I installed that today and used an old iPhone car holder to mount on the dash to the right of the dash cluster in reaching distance. The adapter I bought doesn't allow the head unit to control the play back but putting the iPhone and cradle on the dash means they are actually closer to reach than the head unit. The adapter charges the iPhone which is good, it allowed me to do a good search for a decent earth point behind the seats today, so I ducked up to bunnings, bought myself a dremel and a few attachments and sanded back an area of metal underneath a bracket behind the seats that holds up a small section of the tray it has worked out really well and should be fine for the amps to use. I will take some pics next time to show exactly where I am talking about

http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x36 ... -00110.jpg

So for now, that is the build. I am having a great time with it, it is giving me some great laughs especially now I can't play cricket anymore with my back. The mrs is constantly asking why am I doing all this on such an old shitty car that is mainly used for ferrying my fat ass to and from the station. She just doesn't get the fact that car audio is just another passion of mine and if I wasn't doing a ghetto build on the Sherpa, I would be spending $1,000's on the GT. It just makes economical sense. (She also doesn't know that I am currently auditioning speakers for the wagon but let's just keep that between us hey). One thing I will say, the sound staging and imaging are fantastic, better than some a lot more expensive stereos I have heard. Being such a small car, each driver is only about 60cm from my head so all the music reaches the ears almost simultaneously.

Sorry I didn't take any pics of the actual build process. When I recarpetted the car I put Dynamat everywhere from the boot to the firewall and eliminate some rattles which has worked pretty well. I will take some more photos of the battery terminals I bought from Jaycar a few years ago and the earths etc I have upgraded. I am looking forward to figuring out where and how on earth I am going to mount the two X 2 channel amps I have. I also need to speak to Gambit about the McIntosh sub he has for sale. I am eventually going to build a little enclosure for it and by the cheapest mono I can find and see how it goes with 500wRMS or so, that should be a blast. I am hoping the alternator holds out with all the extra load but that is a bridge I will cross when I come to it.

The next stages I am hoping are:
Get at least one 2channel amp in.
Get the other amp in.
Get a box built for the McIntosh sub and install, can someone confirm it is 4ohm please.
LED cabin lighting from Leo.
LED dash lights
Something else
Something else
Something else
Motorbike engine! or a Suzuki Cappucino engine or something I dunno.

Anyway, enjoy, have a giggle, pay out on me, whatever. I love my little Sherpa.

Peace.

Thanks mate. It is coming along really well, I'm loving it. There are some anomalies in the car wiring, not sure what is the problem, just some funny things happen now and then. Thinking about redoing the door trims in thin MDF and mounting the splits on the doors to free up the room in the foot well, being such a small car you need as much space as possible. I have a million ideas so this thread is good for me to be able to jot down the things I want to eventually do to her. The CV's are badly worn so might have to save up some cash for actual parts instead of faffing around putting stuff into the car.

Leaning towards the crescendo's for the front stage, but I keep seeming to get drawn back to CDT. It's a process really. I have a couple of mates with each so one free weekend I might pull the trims off, slap on a couple of layers of dynamat and give them both an in car audition we'll see. I am finding the centre channel lacking as well so might see what can fit in there. The sub also might get swapped out for a decent 8" at some stage.

Actually, whereabouts in Syd are you mate??? I wouldn't mind if possible meeting up and taking a quick listen of the set in your car. They would have had time to wear-in and the suspension to loosen up now. Have you noticed much of a change in them and the rest of the system?

yeah sure mate! should be fine..
Im based around the East. Let me get the system to its full potential. Just need to get it back to Marty to retune and add some Dynaliner. The interior panals on the doors are getting some rattles. Apart from that, speakers are getting more smoother n sub is much warmer.
I still smile everytime i get in the car just thinkin about the audio side hehehhe :D :D makes EVERY drive a true pleasure

Just a quick update;

The original pedals were pretty well worn and quite slippery causing me to stall a little too often so I headed down to Supercheap Auto and got myself a full sik set of "sports" pedals. I have a set of STi pedals laying around so I might try those at some stage. The only problem with the new pedals is I had to super glue them on so it will be a pr1ck to get them off if I ever need to LOL.
Image

The day i bought her I jumped onto Subaru's website when i got home and ordered some seat covers:
Image

Here is the carpet I used to replace the old smelly carpet in the boot. I think it came up pretty well (the front not so much haha):
Image

You can almost see the Dynamat here. I have lined the whole floor in the boot and most of the foot wells:
Image

I also bought some cheap car badges to spell out Subaru Sherpa (and yes, that is a genuine STi sticker, hektik, I know, +5kW win) I know the letter A in SUBARU is a little skewed but I think it adds to the cars charm:

And now the donk:

Here is a sticker from a rescue shelter called Labradog Rescue (her house is actually called Labradog Lodge). We adopted a Beagle X Lab from there last year. He was only 6 months old when his owners dumped him at the pound and he was close to getting the needle when Amanda (the woman that runs Labradog) rescued him. We have since found out why he was at the pound (he is an absolute shit), but he is great to have around. If you feel like making donations, what the mrs and I do is send her packs of mixed treats (sheeps ears etc) every few months or some chew toys. She has about 5 or 6 labs there at any one time so anything would help really. http://www.labradogrescue.com.au/blog/index.php
Image

And here is our turd... I mean dog. He absolutely loves going for a drive in Ruby, except around corners lol

And quickly, here is a pic of the mother in laws' Commonwhore after I spent two days detailing it. My god it was in terrible condition.

Will get a tune when all mods are completed... Will hopefully receive the Macintosh sub I bought off Gambit sometime this week so I can start thinking about where the hell I am going to mount it. I am thinking here hopefully Image

But I think it will require making a new trim panel out of some thicker MDF. I will then cover the new trim with the same sort of carpet as the flooring. Fingers crossed.

Sorry bud, yeah I did get it, thanks. I haven't had a chance to install it yet. I've only just gotten around to scoping out where I am going to install it. I am thinking it should be relatively easy to make up a new trim piece out of mdf on the drivers side.

I finally managed to get my butt into gear today and install the passenger side Kicker split. One job down, a million to go!!! Also in my spare time today took a run down to supercheap auto, got a can of satin black spray paint and painted the windscreen wiper arms. It was looking a little out of place having short silver wiper arm and big new black wiper blades etc. Looks much better now, I didn't get a before pic but I will put an "after" pic up tomorrow.

The 9886 is a pretty damn good headunit, you've done well to get one for $100! Imprint ready! What are you planning on installing it into? Have you researched your speakers etc yet? Hit me up for any advice you need if your looking at a stereo build.

awesome nice, one take some photos of how you dig the install too, would be interested to see.

Yeah good price because the CD player on it does not work, but thats ok it comes with an ipod cable so will just play stuff off my iphone.
It may go into my liberty, but i am undecided how to go about the DIn facia, i actually like the look of the macintosh hu.

HAHA, might be the same seller. I got my HU cheap and the next day or so the cd mech died... GRRR... Anyways, here are some pics of the windscreen wipers I painted. They look heaps better now than they did. They looked a bit odd having silver arms and big chunky black blade assembly etc.

Also, been off work crook as a dog so here is the latest little tinker in a few moments of lucidness. I have a few 0guage earth leads from a UPS that has been dimantled at work. I couldn't pass them up when I saw them laying there. So I replaced the factory engine to chassis earth.

Found some spare time today, got my butt into gear and installed my JVC 2 Channel amp to run the front splits. Luckily, the amp fits neatly under the passenger seat which I was very surprised about considering the amps' size. The cabling was straightforward but was just a bit tricky due to Rubys' size. It still needs a bit of a tidy up, I'm not 100% happy with it but that's just my finicky perfectionist side. Need to spend a bit of time fiddling with the gains to get them right but so far it sounds pretty good. Gotta love a 300wRMS front stage (2 x 150wRMS) :D

Thanks mate. The mrs just looks at me tinkering on the Sherpa and just shakes her head. No matter how frustrating car audio is, for some reason I find it so relaxing

I have been involved in car audio for over 10years and have built some very, very, VERY good quality stereos, comp winning stereos. If car audio is something you would want to get into, the best way is to ask questions on car audio forums etc and then getting out there and trying the install for yourself. Knowing how to pull your car apart and put it all back together gives you a deeper appreciation for your car (except when you've finished putting it all back together and have 3 or 4 screws left over haha).
