Towing

Postby gooders » Wed May 18, 2011 5:30 pm

All

Can anyone provide any advice on towing with a 2.5? I'm looking at buying a Liberty and I need to be able to tow up to 1500kgs with it. Carpoint says they can do it but can anyone provide some feedback from real life towing experiences? Does it handle it ok? Does it drag the back down?

cheers
prospective Liberty buyer

My suggestion is buy a 3.0L.

I don't like carrying more than 1 or 2 passengers in my car, which would only be an extra 150kg or so. I could not imagine having 1500kg hanging off the back!

I've got a 2.5i and had about 700kg dragging behind me, unbraked, the maximum unbraked load is 750kg. There are definitely faster ways to take off, but it pulls it ok, stopped very respectively too. Not sure how it would go with over a tonne being only a 2.5i, for that sort of work, as stated, I would definitely recommend you hold out and get a 3.0R, they have PLENTY of oomph!

I wouldn't suggest towing with the 2.5 either. I've towed about 850-900kg's braked, and it stopped ok but it wasn't too pleasant to take off. Sure, it pulled, and the trailer came, but i could also physically see the fuel gauge dropping... :?

a 2.5 auto will tow better than a manual,
but the 3.0 will do it effortlessly

Obviously the more power you have the easier towing will be... But I would 100% be going to an auto as these days seem to be better suited for towing, especially if your wanting to tow such a large amount of weight, you are going to land up slipping the hell out of the clutch.
