0W-40 is for the NEW FB family Subaru petrol engines.

Older engines require thicker oil due to tolerances not necessarily being 'in spec'. Of course, your mileage may vary depending on the individual engine.

Also I know this is the current point of discussion, but most oils whilst marketed as fully synth are actually highly refined mineral-grade oils.

Rob / Jim

Great explanation guys. Much appreciated and it contributes very well to our knowledge base.

So what is your technical assessment of the Redline engine oils? They are claimed to have the highest base oil quality and overall sheer strength at the full operating range of the engine and beyond and better durability (is it called breakdown resistance?). All derived of course from the marketing hype. So, does that translate to good for reducing engine wear?

I know it is expensive, but that is not the question here. I am not looking at the economics. As I said, my car is a long term keeper.

I do my servicing every 12500 kms in line with the Subaru service book and as long as I am using a good base oil with specs that exceed the basic recommendations of the OEM, I must be in the green zone, yes?

In your case of stop start city driving you are under severe duty use, which means 12500 is no longer applicable.

The move from 10KKm service intervals to 12500 in the recent 5-8 years has not been due to any real advance in oils or engine technology but rather a advance in marketing. A car which is perceived to need less servicing is more marketable.

Even the best oil in the world which breaks down less over a given period of time, will still be circulating all the contaminants through the engine until you replace it. Also need to consider that once the oil filter gets blocked to a certain point and/or the amount of flow exceeds the throughput of the filter (high RPM), the bypass valve may open which means you are effectively getting no oil filtering.

Jim. mpre good points and thanks again.

So, more frequent servicing due to the city cycle.

What of the Redline base oil claims? Is it good stuff, genuine Group IV or better?

How can I word this without being flamed in to oblivion.....

Subaru surely has some sort of agreement with Castrol? Does that come in to play as to why it's the only one that they recommend?
Also what about warranty.....if something goes wrong and someone at Subaru somehow managed to not put in Castrol when the customer didn't ask for something different.....?

Dont know about any agreement as im not getting anything out of it....
Its the only stuff we use "and a lot of others inc myself" so it must be good, lol.... so "we" recommend it....

Warranty= my fav topic.... stick to the correct grade regardless of brand and it will be fine....
we only use Castrol so why/how could we mistake putting in other oil? only if its supplied by the customer which can be seen on the invoice so your scenario is invalid, it just wont happen. :P
